Uncommon. Art and Imitation in China is an ambitious odyssey covering Chinese art over a 3,500 year period, from the Shang dynasty (ca.1600-1100 BC) to the present day. 'Imitation' has several meanings here, from emulation, in the noblest sense, to venal deception. The three themes of the exhibition are 'archaism', which pays tribute to the past through recreating objects and styles of antiquity; 'trans-cultural influence', where foreign idioms, shapes and designs were adopted for reasons of religion, novelty, trade or, in contemporary art, as social and political commentary; the last is 'inter-media exchange' or the imitation of works of art in a different medium than the prototypes they emulate, usually to display innovations in craftsmanship. In many instances, the works of art in this catalogue embody at least two of these concepts.
