Cette revue médicale a été fondée par Alphée Cazenave (1795-1877), dermatologue à l'hôpital Saint-Louis et professeur agrégé à la Faculté de médecine de Paris. Seuls quatre tomes ont été publiés (1843, 1847, 1850 et 1852). THE FIRST JOURNAL IN FRENCH DEVOTED TO DERMATOLOGY AND SYPHILOLOGY (TOMES 3-4 BOUND IN 1 VOL.) (WITH ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION OF LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS) Cazenave rédigea seul la très grande majorité des articles. Pour diriger la rédaction de ces deux tomes, il se fit aider par son gendre et ancien élève, Maurice-Joseph Chausit (1819-1888), ancien interne de l'Hôpital Saint-Louis (cf. P.F. Martin, Dictionnaire biographique des dermatologues et syphiligraphes français, pp. 81-82) Cette revue comporte : - des observations originales de Cazenave (lupus, etc.), de Chausit (éléphantiasis des arabes, etc.) ; - des articles généraux de Cazenave (lupus [en 4 parties], acné sebacea, herpès circiné, etc.) ou de Chausit (pemphigus aigu) ; - des articles historiques et bibliographiques : la syphilis au XIXe siècle (Ricord, Baumes), les maladies de la peau chez les anciens (Cazenave) ; - des articles d'auteurs étrangers : de Arndtsen (élève de Boeck) sur le favus (avec 13 figures) ; de Boeck sur une nouvelle forme de gale ; de Hébra (Classification des maladies de la peau), etc. - une revue bibliographique, avec analyses détaillées de publications (articles, thèses et livres) françaises et étrangères. La partie la plus novatrice de cet ouvrage concerne le lupus erythémateux. Cazenave à propos d'une observation, donne la première description précise du lupus erythémateux (discoïde), affection à laquelle il donne ce nom. Il rend hommage à son maître Biett qui avait décrit sous le nom d'érythème centrifuge une variété d'affection atteignant essentiellement la face chez des femmes jeunes, et correspondant selon toute vraisemblance à un lupus erythémateux. Cazenave consacre aussi une revue générale au lupus, dont il décrit quatre variétés.
