Tales from the Igloo was first published by Hurtig Publishers of Edmonton in 1972, running to pages with full-page colour illustrations throughout. IThe foreword was written by the Canadian poet Al Purdy, and the book carries illustrated endpapers. Father Maurice Métayer (1914-1974) was a Roman Catholic missionary who arrived in northern Canada in 1939 and spent his working life at missions in Coppermine (Kugluktuk), Holman Island (Ulukhaktok), Reid Island, and Cambridge Bay. His decades of immersion in the language and life of the Copper Inuit gave him the linguistic authority to record these stories directly in Inuktitut before translating them into English, a provenance that distinguishes the collection from texts mediated through interpreters or recalled at a remove from the tradition.The twenty-two legends collected here belong to the people known to ethnologists as the Copper Eskimos, Inuit communities who have for centuries occupied the Canadian Arctic coast between approximately 103 and 123 degrees west longitude, extending at one point south of the Arctic Circle to Contwoyto Lake, with settlements along the shores of the Arctic Ocean and on the islands immediately to the north of the mainland. The stories were originally oral, recorded in Inuktitut and subsequently translated into English.The range of the tales is wide. Animals feature centrally and persistently — fox as a selfish trickster, loons as bearers of magic, bears in human-animal hybrid forms, wolves, crows, ptarmigan, and caribou — and the tension between the human world and the animal world is a recurring structural element. Shamans, ghosts, taboos, and supernatural transformations appear alongside the practical realities of Arctic survival: seal hunting, the long winter, hunger and starvation, kayaks, harpoons, and snow shelters. Many tales involve a grandmother as a pivotal figure. The supernatural elements are inseparable from the ecological ones, and the whole collection conveys, as one Goodreads reader noted, a view of man, nature, and the supernatural very much shaped by the realities of a life bound to that land.
