Hardcover. Condizione: New. 160 pages. Norwegian & English. Stranger in Motherland is a photo book about the origin and identity of Maya Økland. The book collects photographs from four of Økland's travels to her mother's homeland, Brazil, made between 1999 and 2013. Through portraits and landscapes, Økland depicts encounters wit…h relatives of all ages in their everyday surroundings. The people that Økland portrays pose freely, alone or in small groups and are most often near their homes. They are practically dressed and naturally lit. The pictures are unpretentious and almost consistently frontal. A group of children smile at the lens, an elderly woman hangs her arms out to dry. A young couple holds each other close. Like role models in the portrait genre such as Thomas Struth and Rineke Dijkstra, Økland clarifies the social affiliation of the people she portrays. The pictures use a naturalistic, documentary look that appears as an undisguised and authentic insight into the everyday life and living conditions of the people who are portrayed. The documentary approach, however, is complicated by Økland's family connections to the people and places in the book. The images demonstrate a distance between photographer and portrayed through the documentary image form that clarifies Økland's experience of being «foreign in the motherland». The approach means that Stranger in Motherland carries a paradoxical tension between distance and closeness that gives the book similarities with both family albums and social anthropological photo projects. For each picture, the name, place and year are meticulously noted, but the pictures reveal little about the relationship between the portrayed and the photographer. The book can be experienced as deeply personal, but also as a study of family life in Brazil.
