Antony McCall wurde Anfang der 1970er Jahre mit seinen…einzigartigen Lichtinstallationen, den "Solid Light Films", bekannt. Es handelt sich dabei um animierte Linien, die in einen dunklen, mit leichtem Dunst gefüllten Raum projiziert werden. Die so entstehenden dreidimensionalen, flüchtigenFormen, die sich langsam im Raum bewegen, existierten an den Grenzen von Film, Skulptur und Zeichnung. Der Künstler begann die Serie 1973 mit dem einflußreichen Film "Line Describing a Cone" und entwickelte das Konzept in Installationen wie "Long Film for Four Projectors" (1974) weiter. Nach über zwanzigjähriger Schaffenspause knüpfte McCall kurz nach der Jahrtausendwende wieder an diese Arbeiten an. Die Verfügbarkeit von Computeranimation und digitaler Projektion gaben ihm die Mittel, seine konzeptuellen Ideen neu zu formulieren. ***** The works of Anthony McCall exist on the boundaries between film, sculpture, and drawing. They are fleeting, and yet they appear solid and tangible, inviting the viewer to interact with the artwork. McCall first became known in the early 1970s with his unique light installations, Solid Light Films. These consisted of animated lines of light projected in a dark, misty room; the resulting three dimensional forms slowly move about the space. The artist began this series in 1973 with the influential film Line Describing a Cone, and further developed his ideas in installations such as Long Film for Four Projectors (1974). Following a creative hiatus of over twenty years, McCall returned to these projects after the turn of the millennium. The availability of computer animation and digital projection has given him the means to formulate his conceptual work in new ways.
