Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. No Jacket. First Edition. Auction Tactics (Bryant McCampbell, 1915) is a practical, early-20th-century manual on the rules, conventions, and recommended leads and plays for Auction Bridge, combining formal laws with tactical guidance for bidding, opening leads, and defensive play. The book serves as both a rulebook and a how-to guide for Auction Bridge players. It opens with the formal Laws of Auction (procedures for declarations, overbidding, scoring, and penalties), then moves into practical instruction: bidding strategy, opening leads, signaling, and defensive technique. Tables and charts present recommended leads for various holdings in trump and no-trump contracts, and the text explains why particular leads or plays are preferable in given situations. Laws of Auction - numbered rules covering declarations, order of bidding, dummy play, scoring for made and failed contracts, penalties for undertricks, and handling bids made out of turn. Tactical guidance - recommended opening leads by holding (A, K, Q, J, 10, etc.), distinctions between leads when trump is in play versus no-trump, and conventions for signaling partner. Tables and examples - concise charts mapping specific holdings to suggested leads; illustrative hands and play sequences that show how the laws and tactics interact in real play. Practical advice - etiquette, common mistakes to avoid, and how to interpret opponents' bids and leads to infer distribution and strength. Written in a direct, instructional tone for club players and serious amateurs of the era. The emphasis is on clarity and utility: rules are stated precisely, and tactical recommendations are given with rationale so readers can apply them at the table. Published during the period when Auction Bridge was widely played and before Contract Bridge became dominant. The book reflects contemporary thinking about bidding and defensive technique and preserves conventions and lead-choice logic used in early 20th-century bridge play.
