Zensur wird als eine äußerst komplexe und spannungsreiche Beziehung zwischen Geist und Macht verstanden, und mit 'Kultur' ist nicht nur die Textproduktion für Buchhandel und Theater gemeint, sondern jegliche Art von Sinnstiftung. Die chronologische Spannweite will ein überregionales Bild der positiven sowie auch negativen Kontrollinstanzen während der kulturellen und politischen Umwälzungen in Deutschland zwischen Weimarer Klassik und Weimarer Republik (1787-1933) entstehen lassen.
