Likely this is "Long John" Wentworth (1815-1888), one of contributors to the book. He was the editor of the "Chicago Democrat," publisher of an extensive Wentworth family genealogy, a two-term mayor of Chicago, and a six-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Cover corners rubbed; lower front corner cloth worn through to board. Head and tail of spine creased and chipped, with tiny tears. Faint mark where library spine label was removed. Rear hinge paper cracked; binding a bit fragile. Internal library marks: bookplate and inkstamps to inside front cover; few small scars and marks to front endpaper; inkstamp to rear endpaper. Old New Hampshire/Concord Historical Society embossed seal at lower title page, a possible connection to Wentworth, who was born in New Hampshire. Inkstamp name of another prior owner at lower margin of title page. Rear hinge paper cracked; binding a bit fragile. In spite of all the activity on the endpapers and title page, the rest of the text is clean, free of defects, and unworn.
