Boards soiled with abrasion to front picture panel, edges lightly foxed, front and end matter foxed. 1910 Hard Cover. 311, [8] pp. A novelization of the popular French play, with frontispiece and plates by Edward C. Volkert. The story revolves around Jacqueline Floriot, the wife of a prominent lawyer, who is cast out by her husband after being falsely accused of infidelity. Separated from her child, she is forced into a life of hardship and degradation. Years later, Jacqueline, now living under an alias, becomes involved in a murder, and her case is brought before the court. In a dramatic twist, her own estranged son, now a lawyer himself, is appointed as her defense attorney. Neither of them knows the true identity of the other. The novel focuses on themes of motherly love, sacrifice, and the tragic consequences of societal and familial rejection. The climax is heart-wrenching, as Jacqueline makes the ultimate sacrifice to protect her son from the truth of her identity, all in the name of her enduring love for him. About the author: "Alexandre Charles Auguste Bisson (April 9, 1848 - January 27, 1912) was an important French playwright, vaudeville creator, and novelist. Born in Briouze, Orne in Lower Normandy, he was successful in his native France as well as in the United States. Remembered as a significant creator of Parisian vaudeville, in collaboration with Edmond Gondinet, Bisson's 1881 three-act comedy "Un Voyage d'agrement" was performed at the Theatre du Vaudeville in Paris. In 1892, the first of a Bisson's dozen plays came to New York City's Broadway stage. Of his works, Bisson is best remembered for his play "Madame X" that was performed in 1910 both in Paris and on Broadway with Sarah Bernhardt in the leading role. Over the years, the play would be revived for Broadway three times and nine Madame X motion pictures in several languages have been filmed. The first silent screen adaptation was in 1916 and the latest in 2000. Better know versions include a 1929 "talkie" production starring Ruth Chatterton and directed by Lionel Barrymore plus the 1966 production starring Lana Turner. In 2006 a musical has been produced in Chicago, IL based on the original play "Madame X". Bisson also adapted the 1910 bestselling Florence Barclay novel, The Rosary as a three-act play for the Paris stage. Widely acclaimed in the United States, Alexandre Bisson was invited to write about the theatre by The Saturday Evening Post and his articles The Dilemmas of the Theater and How the World Contributes to the American Stage were published in 1912. Alexandre Bisson died in Paris in 1912 at the age of sixty-three.

Book is in Near Fine conditon, in a Good+ DJ. Light blue boards are bright and clean. Light tanning to endpapers. PON. Some light smudges on a few pages. DJ is bright and colorful, with moderate edgewear, light chipping at top of spine and two closed tears at the bottom of the spine. Overall, a very nice copy of this hare-to-find Photoplay book.

Pictorial dust jacket shows age toning, discoloration, shelf wear, creasing, and spots of soiling. Extremities have open and closed tears, tears at head and tail of spine. Age toning, spot of visible staining, and colour transfer from boards to interior. Red publishers cloth had faded gilt titling on front and spine. Cover shows light rubbing, spots of soiling, extremities are bumped and rubbed exposing cardboard in some places, hinges are creased. Textblock is heavily age toned, edges show soiling, gutters have split, writing from P/O on FFEP. Large crease to bottom right corners of first several pages, small closed tear on side edge of pg. 13. Discoloration to margins of several pages throughout, binding has cracked in some places. Though this book has seen better days, all text is legible and it would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
