This collection for the years a.d. 68-96, drawn from inscriptions, papyri and coins, makes easily accessible to students of the period the important documents of the Principates of the Flavian emperors. It is designed to illustrate the history of the Roman world at a critical stage of its development. The extent of the commentary has been limited to allow the inclusion of the largest possible number of texts. The general method of presentation follows that of V. Ehrenberg and A. H. M. Jones in their Documents illustrating the reigns of Augustus and Tiberius. The editors have tried to maintain a reasonable balance between the various subjects under which the documents are grouped, and have kept references to a minimum by providing a comparative table in an Appendix. Documents of later date bearing on the Flavian period are not included; but the collection is intended to be used as a basis for further addition and annotation, and space for these is provided.
