Douglas Mawson is famous as an Antarctic explorer who narrowly escaped death on the ice. In this book, Emma McEwin, Mawson's great-granddaughter, reflects on her forebear's public and private persona. Inspired by letters and portraits and other material traces of his legacy, she writes intimately about his effect on generations of his family and the making and unmaking of myths about him.

Aggiungi al carrelloFolio, pale-grey cloth, spine has black labels embossed with gold lettering. Front cover embossed with a small graphic, lettering and decorative borders. Xxvi, 216 pp., frontispiece, facsimile of five editions of the Adelie Blizzard newspaper, some leaves interspersed between editions unpaginated. Illustrated with some colour images of paintings, drawings and maps; some black-and-white photographs and diagrams included. A fine copy. First edition. A beautiful facsimile of the five editions of Sir Douglas Mawson's newspaper, the Adelie Blizzard. Written by Mawson and his colleagues in 1913, the newspaper was a valuable creative outlet for the men who had withstood much hardship in the prior year. The facsimiles show the corrections and edits made by Mawson and his team, hand-written headings and information gleaned from wireless communication with Australia. This handsome volume includes a preface by Emma McEwin, Mawson's great-granddaughter, as well as an introduction by Dr Elizabeth Leane, Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Tasmania and Mark Pharaoh, Senior Collection Manager at the South Australian Museum. Also included are brief biographies of the expedition's members, and full-page reproductions of some of the artworks and photographs by the expedition's artists Joseph van Waterschoot van der Gracht, Charles Harrison and Frank Hurley.
