From dust jacket: From easter Texas the remnants of a once-magnificent forest, nurtured by moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, extend a thousand miles to the Atlantic shore and as far north as Chesapeak…e Bay. This unique woodland gave birth to two woodpeckers, one large -- the ivory-billed woodpecker, which has not been sighted in over ten years and which is almost surely extinct -- and the other small -- the red-cockaded woodpecker, which may yet be saved. This diminitive bird is the focus of this book. The red-cockaded woodpecker is an eight-inch black-and-white zebra-striped bird that makes its home in southern pine forests. What distinguishes this bird from others is its unique niche: its predilection for nesting within living, sap-drenched pine trees; its sticky defense strategy to counter predatory snakes; and its inheritance of scarce cavity trees from its progenitors. The red-cockaded woodpecker has also evolved very strong grasping toes, longer and sturdier tail feathers (for support), a long and powerful bill so as to hammer into its tree home, and a long tongue of fantastic dexterity. All of these adaptations make the red-cockaded woodpecker totally dependent on pine trees in an open forest. This ecosystem -- that of the lob-lolly pine tree forest -- is this bird's only habitat. And therein lies the bird's problem. These southern pine tries are valuable natural resources. Having withstood the ravages of nature for thousands of years, of fire and storm and predator, it is entirely possible that this animal will succumb finally to benign neglect and at times unwitting collaboration of natural land management institutions like the United States Forest Service and the hard-driving timber and development forces. Red-cockaded woodpeckers are hard to coqunt, but best estimates number them at 3000 or so, and rapidly declining.
