Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book takes a unique look at the ecology of one of the world's most productive ecosystems: the Naknek River system of Bristol Bay, Alaska. The author provides a comprehensive analysis of the system, from its physical aspects and productivity of lakes to the abundance of juvenile sockeye salmon and associated species. The author also explores factors that appear to be limiting production of juvenile sockeye salmon in the system, and suggests several management procedures that might significantly increase the production of smolts, ultimately increasing the yield of adult sockeye salmon to the fishery. This book will be of interest to fisheries scientists, ecologists, and natural resource managers. It provides a wealth of information on the Naknek River system and its sockeye salmon population, and offers valuable insights into the management of this important fishery resource. Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the study of pink salmon in Sashin Creek, a small stream in southeastern Alaska. The author examines the distribution of spawners, survival of eggs and alevins, and production of fry in three areas of the creek. The research provides insights into the factors that influence the productivity of pink salmon spawning beds and the survival of their offspring. The author demonstrates the importance of understanding the distribution of spawners and the survival of eggs and alevins in managing pink salmon populations. By considering the relationship between spawner density, egg survival, and fry production, the author provides valuable insights for fisheries managers and researchers working to ensure the sustainability of pink salmon populations. Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents the results of field studies investigating dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in spawning areas of pink and chum salmon in various Alaskan streams. The author developed an inexpensive and reliable method for measuring DO levels in intragravel water, using special standpipes inserted into the streambed. The author performed systematic and random sampling to analyze DO variations, identifying significant differences between sample areas and across seasons and years. The research revealed that DO levels in spawning gravels can fluctuate greatly, with the lowest levels observed during periods of low streamflow and warm weather. These low DO levels were associated with higher salmon embryo mortality. The findings highlight the potential importance of environmental factors such as dissolved oxygen on the survival of salmon embryos. Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book observes pink salmon eggs and larvae in Sashin Creek, offering detailed insights into their numbers, distribution, and the environmental factors influencing their survival. The author employed innovative methods to collect data on egg and larval abundance, including the use of a hydraulic egg and larval sampler in areas carefully selected using random number tables. The focus on environmental factors examines water quality and stream discharge, providing a comprehensive view of the relationship between the salmon population and its habitat. The author's meticulous research and analysis contribute significantly to our understanding of salmonid ecology, particularly the factors affecting the survival of eggs and larvae. Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the relationship between the composition of the riverbed gravels in salmon spawning grounds and the successful hatching of salmon eggs and development of salmon larvae. The author describes methods for measuring the gravel composition, and presents a relationship between the volume of solids less than a certain minimum dimension and the permeability coefficient of stream bottom materials. This permeability is critical to the survival of eggs and larvae. The author compares gravel composition and permeability of spawning grounds that support varying densities of spawning salmon, demonstrating differences between productive and less productive spawning grounds. The author also discusses temporal changes in gravel composition associated with spawning, logging, and flooding. The findings have significant implications for understanding the factors that affect salmon populations and for managing salmon habitats. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
