Aggiungi al carrelloOriginal boards. Condizione: Very Good+. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good+. First Edition; First Impression. From the library of David Collyer. With b/w plates illustrations. Occasional light soiling to a few pages. Light wear to corners, covers and spine. ; David Collyer is a British documentary photographer known for his intimate, empathetic portrayals of people and communities, particularly those often overlooked by the mainstream. Born and raised in Wales, Collyer initially pursued a career as a paramedic, an experience that would profoundly influence his photographic perspective. Working in this frontline role gave him a unique insight into the human conditionâ"its fragility, resilience, and capacity for quiet dignityâ"which later became central themes within his visual storytelling. Transitioning from paramedicine to photography, Collyer embraced a documentary practice that emphasises respect, patience, and trust. Rather than swooping in as an outside observer, he invests in long-term projects, spending extended periods getting to know his subjects on their own terms. From remote farming communities and fading industrial heartlands to individuals grappling with changing times, his work captures both the everyday patterns of life and its subtle complexities. The resulting images achieve a delicate balance between artful composition and genuine human connection, illuminating the textures of ordinary existence in a manner both raw and tender. Collyerâs work has earned recognition in highly regarded photographic competitions, including distinction in the prestigious Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery in London. He has also participated in significant group and solo exhibitions, as well as contributions to notable photography journals. Through these platforms, his pictures have reached wider audiences, prompting viewers to consider the nuanced realities of rural life, cultural shifts, and personal identity within often neglected corners of society. Today, David Collyer stands as a respected voice in contemporary documentary photography. Anchored by empathy, grounded in authenticity, and guided by a keen observational eye, his images challenge simplistic narratives and encourage deeper understanding. In a world where voices can be lost amidst the noise, Collyerâs photography shines a gentle light on lives that deserve to be seen, heard, and remembered.; 24.5 x 24.2 x 2.2 cms; 200 pages.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. At the turn of the twentieth century, few white, southern leaders would speak out in favor of racial equality for fear of being dismissed as too progressive. Willis Duke Weatherford (1875--1970), however, defied convention as one of the first prominent white southern liberals to dedicate his life to reforming the South's social system, eliminating violence and injustice through education, and opening a dialogue among the affected groups. His energetic efforts led to a rise in progressive action in the region, though at times his own beliefs prevented him from advocating for absolute racial equality. As a result, historians debate Weatherford's legacy: Was he a forward-thinking supporter of human rights or merely a moderate paternalist? In this comprehensive biography, Andrew McNeill Canady offers a reassessment of the influential educator's life and work. Canady surveys Weatherford's work with institutions such as the YMCA, Berea College, and Fisk University and illuminates his many efforts to foster dialogue among southerners of all races about religion, race relations, and Appalachia. He also examines Weatherford's reluctance to challenge Jim Crow laws and the capitalist economy that contributed to the poverty of African Americans and the people of Appalachia, revealing the limitations that southern reformers faced and the often-difficult compromises they were forced to make.During a career that spanned from the Progressive Era to the civil rights movement, Weatherford was involved in virtually every significant southern liberal effort of his time. Past research has focused primarily on Weatherford's early work, but Canady's study is the first to investigate the full trajectory of his life and career. This overdue biography makes a significant contribution to literature on the long civil rights movement and the development of southern liberalism.
