Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - A major critical engagement with a major contemporary writer: absolutely essential reading. --Adam Roberts, author of New Model Army (2010), Jack Glass (2012) and Bête (2014), and winner of the British Science Fiction Award This critical anthology, the first devoted exclusively to the works of China Miéville, sets a high standard for the other such volumes that will surely follow. All the chapters in this collection should be highly recommended to the large and growing number of readers who rightly regard Miéville as one of the pre-eminent imaginative writers of the 21st century. --Carl Freedman, Russell B. Long Professor of English at Louisiana State University and author of Critical Theory and Science Fiction (2000) and Art and Idea in the Novels of China Miéville (2015) An exemplary addition to the Gylphi Contemporary Writers: Critical Essays series, this challenging and fascinating collection is as demanding as its subject. Crucial for those interested in the weird, in science fiction and in the turns of contemporary British fiction. --Robert Eaglestone, Professor of Contemporary Literature and Thought, Royal Holloway, University of London Since the publication of his first novel in 1998, China Miéville has distinguished himself as one of the most exciting and inventive writers working in any genre in contemporary British fiction. The author of nine novels and two short story collections to date, as well as comics script-writing, numerous critical works on science fiction, and legal scholarship, Miéville is a critically acclaimed writer who has also achieved popular success. The chapters in this collection respond to the range of interests that have shaped Miéville's fiction from his influential role in contemporary genre debates, to his ability to pose serious philosophical questions about state control, revolutionary struggle, regimes of apartheid, and the function of international law in a globalized world. This collection demonstrates how Miéville's fictions offer a striking example of contemporary literature's ability to imagine alternatives to neoliberal capitalism at a time of crisis for leftist ideas within the political realm.…

Hard Back. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. First Edition Stated. 678 Pages with a comprehensive fourteen page Index. First Printing of the First Edition. Copyright 2010 by Bar 225 Media Ltd. Black cloth with Silver spine lettering. A beautiful book illustrated with black and white photographs on almost every page. Attractive photographic endpapers. Arizona's Little Hollywood. That was the nickname Sedona gave itself in the 1940s and early 1950s. And why not? On screen, the Arizona town's stunning natural wonders were visual shorthand for the American West, as iconic in western movies as the buttes of Monument Valley. And yet, despite the cute moniker, viewers-and reviewers-generally had no clue that they were looking at the same locations in film after film. Sedona sits about 120 miles north of Phoenix, nestled between thousand-foot- high walls f tone in lushly forested Oak Creek Canyon and the wide open space of the Verde Valley, and it was the diversity of this unspoiled landscape that made it such an ideal location to shoot outdoor scenes of movies. Stretching as far back as 1923, Sedona's signature red rocks were a fixture in major Hollywood productions- including enduring favorites such as Johnny Guitar, Angel and the Badman, Leave Her to Heaven, Blood on the Moon, and 3:10 to Yuma -- but typically were identified to audiences as the terrain of Texas, California, Nevada, and even Canadian border territory. For fifty years, this picturesque desert outpost quietly played host to Hollywood legends in the making, yet the town is nowhere to be found in standard histories of the movies. Sedona's tale offers nothing less than a time line of history -- of moviemaking in America and the popular (and sometimes not-so-popular) culture of the years that shaped it. The story begins in the silent era, when Zane Grey's The Call of the Canyon and Kit Carson, with Joseph P. Kennedy's doomed movie superstar Fred Thomson, were filmed in the Oak Creek Canyon area just outside Sedona proper. The 1930s saw the arrival of a dozen B westerns, including four visits from silent film idol turned talkie cowboy star George O'Brien and the only Hopalong Cassidy film ever shot outside California. The decade also saw Sedona cast in her most historically significant -- and least known-movie role, as the promised land of milk and honey in Der Kaiser von Kalifornien, a Nazi western designed to validate Adolf Hitler's schemes of territorial expansion to the people of Germany. This book tells the almost forgotten story of Sedona. Contents in Six Chapters: The 1920s, The 1930s, The 1940s, The 1950s, The 1960s, and The 1970s. Plus Introduction, Acknowledgements, Sedona Filmography 1923 - 1973, Notes and Bibliography. Large Heavy book that will incur addtional charges for Priority Shipping to most locations.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book asks the question 'How are we going to get to a world more-so of free interacting fellow individual people and less-so of restricted groups intrinsically apart from one another We don't live in a world so much of cultural groups, religions, nations, skin colors, and genders as much as one of fellow individual people- like ourselves. Recognizing your individuality and that of others is not the same as being individualistic- it is not selfish nor self-absorbed- it is instead our most widespread and fundamental common language and honest base of community with each other. The root of prejudice, terrorism, war and many of humankind's problems is a failure of people to recognize and accept their own individuality socially and respect and empathize with the fundamental individuality of all others. Socially we should recognize, empathize, and respect each other as individuals regardless of what groups we belong to.No individual should have their skin color or gender define who they are throughout their lives on this planet. We need to transform into a 'fellow individual' based society rather than one of fundamentally separated groups of people. We can do this without losing our cultures, religions, nations, states, tribes, languages, etc. - we just need to prioritize- and lead with- individual respect towards all other people.…
