XX [From the inner flaps] THIS VOLUME PRESENTS a summary of work accomplished since the Spanish conquest in the contemporary description and historical reconstruction of the indigenous languages and language families of Mexico and Central America. Numerous authorities have contributed to it. William Bright provides an annotated selection of descriptive materials covering this four-hundred-year period. Marfa Teresa Fernåndez de Miranda presents a critical review of published attempts at reconstruction of earlier stages in the development of Middle American language families. Morris Swadesh brings lexicostatistical techniques to bear on the classification of the languages in such families. Robert E. Longacre recounts the application of techniques for comparing languages within such families, for the purpose of reconstructing the earlier stages in each sub-family and for arriving at an inventory of the linguistic elements present in those earlier stages. Sarah C. Cudschinsky presents an evaluation of the recent attempts to correlate, both synchronically and diachronically, the distribution of indigenous linguistic features as evidenced in modern dialect surveys with the distribution of socio-cultural features as revealed by anthropological studies of indigenous culture and social organization. Sketches of Classical Nahuatl by Stanley Newman, Classical Yucatec Maya by Norman A. McQuown, and Classical Quiché by Munro S. Edmonson provide working tools for tackling the voluminous early post-conquest texts in these languages of late preconquest empires (Aztec, Maya, Quiché). Further sketches of Sierra Popoluca by Benjamin F. Elson, of Isthmus Zápotec by Velma B. Pickett, of Huautla de Jiménez Mazatec by Eunice V. Pike, of Jiliapan Pame by Leonardo Manrique C., and of Huamelultec Chontal by Viola Waterhouse —together with those of Nahuatl, Maya, and Quiché—provide not only descriptive outlines of as many different linguistic structures but also linguistic representatives of seven structurally different families of Middle American languages.

McQuown was an American anthropologist and linguist renowned for his extensive fieldwor…k, archival research, and documentation of indigenous languages, particularly those in Mexico and Central America, which formed a significant part of his contribution to general linguistics. He was a prominent figure in establishing modern linguistics programs and archives at the University of Chicago, and his work resulted in comprehensive texts like the Handbook of Middle American Indians, Vol. 5: Linguistics and a long list of publications on topics ranging from language teaching to the classification of indigenous languages. Robert V. Kemper, born in San Diego, California, on November 21, 1945, resided in Dallas, Texas, where he was Professor of Anthropology at Southern Methodist University. He received his Ph.D. in Anthropology in 1971 from the University of California at Berkeley and spent the academic year 1971-1972 there as a National Endowment for the Humanities Post-Doctoral Fellow in Mexican American Studies before joining the SMU faculty. At SMU, he served as Chair of the Department of Anthropology, President of the Faculty Senate, and member of the University Board of Trustees. His research interests included migration and urbanization, history of anthropology, community development, tourism, Mexico, and the United States. His numerous publications include Anthropologists in Cities (1974), Migration and Adaptation: Tzintzuntzan Peasants in Mexico City (1977), Migration Across Frontiers: Mexico and the United States (1979), Chronicling Cultures: Long-Term Field Research in Anthropology (2002), and Urban Life (5th ed., 2010). He has served as President of the Society for Latin American Anthropology and the Society for Urban Anthropology, as well as editor of Human Organization, editor for Social-Cultural Anthropology of the American Anthropologist, and associate editor for Urban Anthropology.
