A special report to the 10th Convention of the AFL-CIO (held October 18-23, 1973) on the Watergate scandal, chronicling the corruption of the Nixon administration, authored by a committee made up of five prominent labor leaders. The report provides commentary on the tapes, public statements, corporate and political funds, legal settlements, the subversion of democracy and its impact on labor, and the views and rulings of the courts. It also includes a day-by-day chronology (Jul 23, 1970 to Nov 26, 1973), Nixon's enemies list, and a list of his 'fat cat' contributors.

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Uncommon book on Watergate. Very Good. No marks. Pages and cover lightly age tanned. Covers known events through December 1973. vi, 164 pages; 22 cm. (American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations, Publication 150) . . . . . . . FROM THE INTRODUCTION BY GEORGE MEANY.This is why Watergate is important to us. We are not referring merely to the break-in at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee. We are referring to what was clearly a systematic, determined effort, involving some of the most powerful people in this country, to undermine the two-party system and thereby to damage critically the rights of the people. That this effort did not succeed is a tribute more to the incompetence of the Watergate burglars than to the vigilance of our political leadership. The nation is indebted to the bungling of the burglars-as it is to the quick thinking of Frank Wills, the young Watergate security guard-but these are not sufficiently strong foundations on which to rest our democratic institutions, We must not only punish those who are proven guilty, we must once and for all drastically curtail the power of money in politics. On August 29, 1972, the President said of Watergate: *This kind of activity, as I have often indicated, has no place whatever in our political process. We want the air cleared. We want it cleared as soon as possible.* So do we. That's the reason for this report. We do not want to wallow in the dirty past. We want to make a cleaner future.

No Binding. Condizione: Fine. Signed "George Meany in black ink and is dated December 6, 1972. Typed letter measures 6.5" X 8", has normal mailing folds and is in fine condition. George Meany was born on Aug. 16, 1894, in New York City. He inherited his dedication to the trade union movement from his father, who was president of a local plumbers' union. When George had to leave high school because of difficult family circumstances, he chose his father's trade. After a 5-year apprenticeship, he received his journeyman plumber's certificate in 1915. In 1922 Meany was elected business agent of his union local. Although unionism did not thrive during the 1920s, Meany steadily broadened his activities within the building trades. President of the New York State Federation of Labor (1934-1939), he took advantage of the progressive mood of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal by helping enact more pro-labor bills and social reform measures than had previously been passed in the entire history of the New York Legislature. In 1939 Meany was elected secretary treasurer of the American Federation of Labor (AFL). During World War II Meany served on the War Labor Board and represented the AFL on Roosevelt's committee to draw up wartime labor policy. He also served on a special committee that the president regularly consulted on labor-management problems. After the war Meany helped establish the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, which contributed to the success of the Marshall Plan for the rehabilitation of war-torn Europe. In November 1952 Meany was chosen president of the AFL. Three years later he was unanimously elected president of the newly combined AFL-CIO at its first convention. He was consistently reelected without opposition. Throughout his career Meany was interested in reform, both within the labor movement and society at large. He initiated the first major attacks on corruption in the unions and was responsible for establishing a code of ethical practices for all union affiliates. He also took important steps toward eliminating racial discrimination in the labor movement. Under Meany's leadership, the AFL-CIO vigorously supported the Occupational Safety and Health Act, designed to protect employees from dangerous work conditions. The act became law in 1970. Meany put the full political force of the labor movement behind efforts to enact civil rights legislation. Without the trade union movement's support, none of the civil rights bills passed during the 1960s would have gone through Congress. The results of these bills testify to the persisting relevance of the labor movement and to Meany's social vision. President Dwight D. Eisenhower twice appointed Meany a U.S. delegate to the United Nations General Assembly, and Meany received numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1963). George Meany died on January 10, 1980, at the age of 86. Signed by Author(s).

No Binding. Condizione: Fine. Signed "George Meany" in black ink. This photograph measures 8" X 10" and is in FINE condition. George Meany, (born August 16, 1894, New York, New York, U.S.?died January 10, 1980, Washington, D.C.), U.S. labour leader, president of the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) from the time the two unions merged in 1955 until 1979, when he retired. A plumber's son and a plumber himself by trade, Meany joined the United Association of Plumbers and Steam Fitters of the United States and Canada in 1915 and was elected business agent of a Plumbers and Steam Fitters local in 1922. In 1932 he was elected a vice president of the New York State Federation of Labor, and he served as its president from 1934 to 1939. His work moved to the national level with his 1939 election as secretary-treasurer of the American Federation of Labor (AFL). Upon the death of William Green in 1952, Meany became the AFL's president. One of Meany's greatest accomplishments was the merger of two competitive and dissimilar labour organizations: the AFL, which was organized by craft, and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), which was organized by industry. His long tenure as president of the combined AFL-CIO made him the leading spokesman for American labour interests, and he used his power vigorously. He transformed the nature of the U.S. labour movement from radical to conservative, preferring to achieve goals through lobbying and dispute arbitration rather than through strikes and marches. In 1957 he expelled the Teamsters Union, led by Jimmy Hoffa, from the AFL-CIO, and he lost the United Auto Workers after disputes with its president, Walter Reuther, in 1968. Though Meany was considered tardy in supporting equal job opportunities, the program that he eventually approved became the cornerstone of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In 1963 Meany was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 1977 he helped to lead the United States out of the International Labour Organisation when it refused to criticize repressive communist policies. Labour historians note that during Meany's term as AFL-CIO president, union membership as a percentage of the nonagricultural U.S. workforce declined from 33 percent in 1955 to 23 percent in 1979.
