A handsome 1817 map of the Mediterranean Sea produced for John Thomson's New General Atlas . It provides abundant information on the coasts and some of the main ports in the sea 'at the center of the world'. A Closer Look The sheet consists of a central map and seven insets, depicting, clockwise from top-left, the bay or harbors of Marseilles, Genoa, Gibraltar, Smyrna, Algiers, Algeciras, and Livorno. Banks, hazards, islets, and many coastal settlements are noted on the main map, while soundings, currents, and anchorages are provided in the insets. The insets also indicate important landward features for mariners, such as lighthouses, forts, and 'watering places'. Unlike most Thomson maps, this map includes considerable navigational data, including depth soundings. White not practical for navigation, the presence inclusion of such data underscores the Mediterranean's significance to European commerce, as well as its central role in the just-ended Napoleonic Wars. Publication History and Census This map was engraved in 1817 by Samuel John Neele for inclusion in the first edition of John Thomson's New General Atlas . This 1943 Army Orientation Course Newsmap map of the Mediterranean, Europe, and North Africa details Allied operations in the middle of June. Short paragraphs describe five significant events from the past week. The most important, particularly with the benefit of hindsight, garners top recognition: The Allied capture of four small islands in the Mediterranean. Published only a few weeks before the Allied invasion of Sicily, codenamed Operation Husky, the eviction of Italian forces from these islands removed one of the last hurdles to the forthcoming landings. From Sicily, the Allies would jump to mainland Italy, the first Western Allied assault on Axis-occupied Europe. Other actions recounted include brutal fighting on the Eastern Front between the Nazis and the Red Army, British and American aerial bombardments of targets in Germany, and an announcement that U.S. submarines sunk another dozen Japanese ships the previous week. The Mediterranean and South Pacific Maps A brilliant blue shades areas occupied by the Allies, including the four islands discussed above. Gray regions mark Axis occupied countries and Spain, Portugal, and Turkey are marked as neutral. A Closer Look Coverage embraces the Mediterranean Basin. Color shading indicates sea depth, while more detailed soundings are provided near coastlines. Diving schools, including those managed by the Club Méditerranée (Club Med), are noted, along with locations of the Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques and agents of La Spirotechnique, a division of the firm Air Liquide, which sold regulators and other diving equipment, including a revolutionary regulator co-designed by Jacques Cousteau. Finally, the locations of ancient and modern shipwrecks are marked. Surrounding the map are illustrations of sea creatures, shipwrecks, and marine flora. Making Diving Accessible Prior to World War II (1939 - 1945), diving was very difficult and highly dangerous, hardly the stuff for tourists and casual swimmers. But new inventions (such as the Cousteau-Gagnan regulator) and savvy businesses made the sport more accessible in the postwar period. Diving took off on both sides of the Atlantic in the 1950s, and by the 1960s, it had become an established subculture within the world of maritime sport and recreation.
