Condizione: Neu. Transcultural Confrontations of German Immigrants and the Promise of American Democracy. Edited on Behalf of the European Association for American Studies by Hans-Jürgen Grabbe. Why has the promise of American democracy been so persuasive to immigrants despite prejudice regarding cultural inferiority, a history of slavery and genocide, violations of human rights, media manipulations, and imperial self-righteousness? How can we analyze, understand, and evaluate the response patterns of immigrants, which evolved after the shock of arrival in the United States and the encounter with severe democratic shortcomings? This book investigates patriotic dissent of naturalized German immigrants to overcome what the author calls "the democratic gap", namely the discrepancy between democratic ideals and practices. By turning to six force fields (abolitionism, female emancipation, cultural pluralism, patriotic performance culture, the civil rights movement, and Holocaust consciousness), a comparison of democratic criticism between German immigrants and African American writers reveals the underlying premises of transcultural confrontations and hidden motives behind declarations of Americanness. The response patterns discussed are also relevant for other immigrant groups such as Asian Americans, Arab Americans, or Hispanic and Latino Americans. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Dutch edition: Gezichten van de Bevrijding - Nederlandse versie: Gezichten van de Bevrijding. The Canadian War Cemetery in Groesbeek is the final resting place of 2,618 soldiers from Canada and the British Commonwealth. Many of them were killed during the liberation of Europe in the final months of the Second World War. In addition, the impressive Groesbeek Memorial bears the engraved names of 1,011 soldiers who have been missing since the crossing of the Seine in August 1944. This richly illustrated book brings their stories to life. Who were these young men who gave their lives for freedom, democracy and peace? 'Faces of Liberation' is not only a historical document, but also a living tribute to the deep transatlantic ties between the Netherlands and Canada. Thanks to the efforts of Dutch volunteers, who maintain contact with Canadian relatives, the memories of these fallen servicemen live on. With special attention to the Canadian contribution to the liberation of the Netherlands, the role of First Nations soldiers, and the way in which this history is commemorated in both countries, Faces of Liberation offers a novel perspective on the legacy of war and how it is remembered. The extensive lists of names of the fallen and missing also makes it not only a unique reference work but also a powerful reminder of our enduring duty to remember. The Canadian War Cemetery in Groesbeek honors 2,618 soldiers from Canada and the Commonwealth, with 1,011 missing engraved on the Groesbeek Memorial. Faces of Liberation explores their stories, the Canadian role in liberating the Netherlands, First Nations soldiers, and transatlantic ties, preserving their memory through Dutch-Canadian efforts. Hardback. Condizione: New. In a first, this anthology presents essays by art historians and cultural scientists from both sides of the Atlantic to rediscover, analyze and contextualize the rich and largely unknown art of Winold Reiss, opening up a new, previously untapped archive of multicultural Modernism. The German-American artist, who was born in Karlsruhe in 1886 and arrived in New York in 1913, defies instant categorization. With his dual background in fine arts and applied arts he set out to bridge the gulf between "high" and "low" art introducing a bold use of color to the American art scene and to interior design. In his portraits Reiss captured the multi-ethnic diversity of the US. His specific blend of cultural otherness, primitivism, and depictions of ethnicity challenged the conventions of the time. Look inside.…
