A FIRST EDITION, likely first printing, from 1943, this has brown cloth over boards stamped with orange lettering to front & spine. In 248 pages + 3 additional pages of other Whitman titles in rear, illustrations throughout text & decorative endpapers by Hedwig Jo Meixner. Condition is Good: very clean & bright, binding strong & straight, front hinge cracked, rear one intact but rear free endpaper is partially torn out. Pages heavily tanned, especially around edges, but unmarked save for old gift inscription in pen to front free endpaper. A few pages in rear show chipping & tearing to fore edge side. Mild rubbing to extremities & very slight corner bumping. The unclipped DJ (with a synopsis & lists of other Whitman children's titles on flaps & rear) is Fair-Good: colorful, but faded, with chipping at all corners & both ends of spine; nicely protected in new mylar cover Free!
