In-8° broché, 7 pages et une très grande planche hors-texte en trois volets. « Les têtes préparées par les Jivaros sont aujourd'hui moins rares et moins recherchées : nos collections eu renferment jusqu'à trois spécimens, et l'on nous en signale deux autres en Angleterre. La première,… envoyée en 1861 par M. Cassola à M. W. Bollaert, se trouve sommairement décrite dans les Transactions de la Société ethnologique de Londres ; elle venait d'une hutte des rives de la Pastassa, et l'on supposa que c'était une tête de chef ennemi, « portée comme un talisman dans les combats. » Les téguments détachés des os formaient une petite tête qui paraissait réduite au quart de son volume primitif. Une corde était fixée au sommet de la tête ; une autre était passée dans les lèvres perforées et pendait par devant. Les oreilles étaient percées et les narines réunies étaient remplies de résine noire. M. R. Owen émit l'opinion que c'était le tannage de la peau qui avait amené la réduction de volume. M. Bollaert inclinait vers la dessiccation devant le feu sur un moule d'argile. « Un second échantillon de l'industrie taxidermique des Jivaros, décrit par M. Barriero, a été montré à l'Exposition universelle de Londres de 1862, par don R. de Silva Ferro ; il venait d'une tribu que Jl. Barriero nomme Tambo ou Tumba. M. Barriero a fourni à propos de cette pièce des détails intéressants sur l'agent de la dessiccation (une pierre chauffée au feu et introduite dans la peau de la tête), sur la fête du triomphe, sur les superstitions qui s'attachent à la possession de ce genre de trophée ou chancha, transformé, dit l'auteur, en idole, en oracle, en talisman quand il vient d'un guerrier renommé par sa bravoure. » Le caractère saillant de ces préparations est leur extraordinaire réduction. Notre gravure représente en vraie grandeur, un échantillon non moins remarquable que celui de M. Fabre ; c'est une tête due au P. Pozzi ; elle a été préparée par les Jivaros ; nous l'avons fait dessiner d'après nature dans les galeries d'anatomie comparée du Muséum d'histoire naturelle, afin de reproduire fidèlement le hideux aspect de ce tannage monstrueux. C'est probablement en effet, par un certain mode de tannage, que les Jivaros, après avoir désossé et vidé la tête, arrivent à lui donner un volume, qui n'excède guère celui d'une orange. Chose singulière, ces conserves, laissent aux traits leur forme première, elles les réduisent sans changer le rapport des proportions primitives. - - - - - - - - - - - n-8 ° paperback, 7 pages and a very large inset plate in three parts. "A second sample of the taxidermic industry of the Jivaros, described by M. Barriero, was shown at the London Universal Exhibition of 1862, by Don R. de Silva Ferro; he came from a tribe that Barriero calls Tambo or Tumba. Mr. Barriero has given some interesting details of this piece about the agent of desiccation.
