Ainsi, tout en accordant une place centrale au travail obligatoire, institué par les lois de Vichy de septembre 1942 et février 1943 (créant le STO), d'autres formes de travail pour le Troisième Reich ont été examinées : le volontariat, dont l'importance a longtemps été sous-estimée ; le travail, en France même, dans les usines ou les multiples chantiers ouverts par les Allemands, en premier lieu ceux du Mur de l'Atlantique. Des variations de focale ont permis d'aborder aussi bien des exemples régionaux qu'une série de comparaisons avec d'autres pays européens, de l'Ouest comme de l'Est. Sous l'angle politique, le Service du Travail Obligatoire a fortement contribué à renforcer l'hostilité envers l'occupant, mais aussi à détacher de nombreux Français du régime de Vichy et de sa politique de collaboration. En ce sens, il constitue bien, selon l'expression de Jean-Pierre Azéma, "une erreur irréparable".
