Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Used - Very Good. This is a volume of literary criticism with representative selections from the major writings of the ten foremost figures who have decisively influenced contemporary Israeli culture and thought. The literary creations of each are evaluated in brilliant critical essays by Menachem Ribalow, noted Hebr…ew scholar and critic. The writers represented include the great triumvirate of modern Hebrew poetry - Bialik, Tchernihovsky, and Schneur. A separate essay analyzes Bialik, the poet laureate, in another role, the narrator of folk tales anf legends. The pagan poetry of Tchernihovsky, and Schneur's poems of passion, the lyric poetry of Jacob Fichman, the mystic poetry of Shin Shalom, the idylls of David Shimoni and the national poetry of Avigdor Hameiri are represented and discussed in separate chapters. In addition to poetry the book deals with novels, short stories and plays, particularly with the Hassidic and Israeli novels of Samuel Joseph Agnon, the European and Palestinian novels of Hameiri, the starkly realistic short stories of Gershon Shoffman and the majestic dramas of Matthais Shoham. To enhance the books usefulness not only for the general reader but also for study groups and more formal courses, a biographical sketch of each author is included with the selections from his work and their critical evaluations. To comprehend Israel's inner spirit, some knowledge of its literature and those who create it is indispensable, for the literature of a people not only mirrors their soul, it also articulates their aims and gives voice to their standards and values.

"Born in Chudnov, Volhynia (Russia), Ribalow (1895-1953) received a yeshivah education and also studied at the University of Moscow; he emigrated to the United States in 1921. Two years later he was appointed editor of the Hebrew weekly… Hadoar. For 30 years he wrote his weekly editorials under his pseudonym, M. Shoshani, and hundreds of essays which appeared in various periodicals and, eventually, were collected in five volumes. As an essayist he concentrated on literary criticism, especially of Hebrew poetry. Though his love for Hebrew sometimes led him to hyperbolic evaluations of Hebrew writers, he was a perceptive critic. Many Hebrew authors in the U. S. Made their debut under his guidance. Ribalow was a leader of Histadrut, an organization which propagates Hebrew culture in the United States. With Israel's President Izhak Ben-Zvi, he was co-president of the World Hebrew Union.
