For the wheels of the theatre turn with breathtaking speed, and today's creation - and our interest in it - is quickly gone, never to return. But the people persist. So this book is dedicated to the people who make the theatre: to the actors. Again and again they don their masks, hoping to captivate the audience. In these pages, each of the actors has the main role on the stage I have provided. Beneath the many layers of make-up, I looked for the expression of individuality. I beguiled them this time into interpreting words of their own, rather than others'; and so, on the pages facing the portrait, they wrote - revealing or concealing some small facet of their personality.
