THE IDEA OF AN EXPEDITION to the Pacific Ocean had burned in the heart of Meriwether Lewis for at least a decade before Thomas Jefferson negotiated the purchase of the Louisiana Territory in 1803. When the American flag was finally raised over St. Louis in 1804, Meriwether Lewis and almost certainly his friend and fellow army officer William Clark were in attendance. They would soon set out from St. Louis to explore this newly acquired territory on the adventure of a lifetime. Jefferson instructed the pair to travel the length of the Missouri River, find a route across the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific, contact Indian tribes, take latitudinal and longitudinal readings, gather specimens of flora and fauna, make maps, and keep journals. The Corps of Discovery, as the expedition would come to be known, would in the next two years fill in gaping blank spaces on the map of the United States. They would gather thousands of never~before~seen specimens including the grizzly bear and the condor, meet dozens of Indian tribes, and record the wonders of the unspoiled United States in the pages of their journals. Lewis or Clark wrote every single day, and their journals present a rich tapestry of natural wonders, high adventure, and the grueling, daily toil of moving an expedition across vast unknown regions of the United States.
