Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover, viii + 205 pages, NOT ex-library. Book is clean and bright with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Untorn dust jacket with noticeable sunning to the spine and upper edge of the rear panel, light handling wear. -- Arthur Mettinger's Aspects of Semantic Opposition in English offers a rigorous, data-driven exploration of antonymy as a key lexical relation, building a bridge between structuralist semantic theory and the actual use of opposites in natural language. Rather than approaching the topic from a purely abstract or logical perspective, Mettinger grounds his study in empirical evidence, combining corpus-based investigation with theoretical precision. Drawing on 350 antonym pairs from Roget's Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases and more than 350 contextual pairs from 43 contemporary English novels, he develops a comprehensive analytical framework for understanding how opposites function both systemically and in context. At the heart of the book is the distinction between systemic and non-systemic semantic opposites. Systemic opposites are shown to have a definable place within the structure of language, governed by consistent semantic dimensions such as scalarity or complementarity. Non-systemic opposites, on the other hand, require contextual and encyclopaedic knowledge to interpret, resisting clear classification but playing a vital role in meaning construction. Through this distinction, Mettinger introduces a model of opposition that goes beyond binary logic, incorporating the subtleties of language use and variation. The study identifies ten syntactic frames in which antonym pairs frequently appear - structures such as "X and Y" or "neither X nor Y" - which serve as heuristics for detecting and analyzing opposites in texts. These frames reveal patterns of co-occurrence and syntagmatic integration, offering a method for extending empirical research using large corpora. His typology of oppositeness - based on semantic dimensions like gradability, directionality, and attainability of zero - allows for the systematic categorization of lexical contrast across a wide spectrum of expressions. Mettinger also addresses challenging issues in lexical semantics, including the treatment of negative prefixes, the complexities of markedness, and the distinction between negation and opposition. His approach is carefully circumscribed to exclude psychological or logical concerns, focusing instead on establishing a consistent semantic and syntactic basis for classification. The result is an innovative and methodical account that significantly advances our understanding of lexical opposition. This volume will appeal to researchers in semantics, lexicography, and corpus linguistics, offering both a detailed theoretical model and practical tools for the analysis of meaning relations. It also opens paths for comparative and cross-linguistic research, encouraging further study of opposition in other languages and semantic systems. -- Contents: 1. Paperback. Condizione: New. More than any other European language English has been shaped by its contacts with other languages such as Celtic, Latin, Scandinavian and French. This is true not only of the vocabulary, but also of morphology and even phonology and syntax. But also the contact between different varieties of English played an important role, especially in the shaping of the Englishes outside England. The papers contained in this volume deal with such contacts from various points of views. Major topics are: the restructuring of lexical fields by borrowing processes in Old, Middle and Early Modern English, the influence of Scandinavian on the morphology, the influence of Latin on English syntax, the development of Middle English verse meter under Italian influence, the origin of spelling conventions, the role of code-switching and language mixing for the development of the language, and the role of language contact in general in Central Europe.
