Stand früher das Studium von Sprache und Literatur so wie z.T. auch der Geistesgeschichte des vormodernen Japan im Mittelpunkt, so exist…ieren heute eine Reihe von japanologischen Einrichtungen, die sich inten siv mit dem gegenwärtigen Japan auseinandersetzen. Fragen der japanischen Gesellschaft und des japanischen Rechts gehören dabei ebenso zu den For schungsthemen wie Probleme der japanischen Wirtschaft, der japanischen Un ternehmen u.v.a.m. Die Japanologie ist damit von einer rein philologisch-hi storisch ausgerichteten Wissenschaft zu einer vielfältige Methoden nutzenden Regionalwissenschaft geworden. Die vielen Facetten, unter denen 'Japanolo gie' heute auftritt, erleichtern nicht gerade das Selbstverständnis des Faches und machen den Zugang für Außenstehende oft schwer. Allerdings besitzt die Japanologie kein Monopol mehr auf die Japanfor schung. In vielen Disziplinen wird heute über Japan geforscht. Kaum ein Fachgebiet besitzt heute noch keine Japankontakte. Viele Wissenschaftler reisen nach Japan, besuchen Ministerien, Forschungseinrichtungen und Universitäten, sammeln englischsprachiges Material und suchen nach Ansprechpartnern in ja panischen Einrichtungen, mit denen sie in englischer Sprache kommunizieren zu erhalten, oder arbeiten mit Dolmetschern. Die können, um Informationen Ergebnisse solcher Forschungen, so verdienstvoll sie sein mögen, erwecken bei Japanologen oft Skepsis. Es wird von den jeweiligen Fachvertretern häufig nicht erkannt, daß englischsprachige Quellen japanischer Provenienz nur ganz bestimmte und zum Teil einseitige Informationen liefern.
