Seit dem Tode Meyers am 6.3.1877 war dies meist Oberstlieutenant Adolf Bürkli. Diese Reihe wurde nur gelegentlich von anderen Themen und Autoren unterbrochen. Das ursprüngliche Konzept von Meyer-Ott bestand darin, dass jeweils "nach einer allgemeinen Einleitung jedes Mal um bestimmte, theilweise auch im Porträt vorgeführte Persönlichkeiten herum die Ereignisse einer kriegerischen Epoche sich anreihen, unter schärfster Erfassung der wesentlichen Gesichtspunkte." (Horner, p. 35) - Portr.-Front. (bez. 'Photo-Lithogr.', ev. ein rasterloses Ätz- od. Umdruckverfahren) von Generalmajor [Hans] Felix Werdmüller (1658-1725], Militär. Ursprünglich Leutnant in Frankreich, wurde Werdmüller 1693 Oberstlieutenant und Kommandant des sog. Defensivbataillons in Holland. "In der Schlacht bei Ramelies (1706) führte er unter Marlborough den Sieg der Verbündeten herbei [.]. Auch in der Schlacht von Oudenarde (11. VII. 1708) trug er wesentlich zum Siege bei. Im Gegensatz zu den französischen Diensten wird den "weiteren Engagements der Schweizer, z.B. in den Generalstaaten, Spanien, Habsburg-Österreich, Neapel, Sardinien-Piemont" generell weniger Aufmerksamkeit zuteil, was u.a. auf die wesentlich längere und intensivere und damit auch quantitativ bedeutendere Tradition der Soldabkommen (sog. Kapitulationen) mit Frankreich zurückzuführen ist. "Die Geschichte und die Bedeutung der Schweizer Truppen in Frankreich unterscheiden sich nicht nur was die gesamthafte Dauer der Dienste anbetrifft von denjenigen in Holland; unterschiedlich waren vor allem die Beweggründe, welche die Kantone zur Entsendung von Truppen nach Frankreich oder Holland bewogen. Es waren die reformierten Orte, die seit jeher mit Holland Kontakte aller Art pflegten und die als Reaktion auf die Aggressionspolitik Ludwigs XIV. 1693 den Generalstaaten erstmals die offizielle Werbung von Schweizer Truppen erlaubten. Die von 1693 bis 1795 angeworbenen Soldaten stammten vor allem aus den Gebieten von Bern, Zürich und Graubünden sowie noch anderen kleineren reformierten Orten und Städten." (J. A.
