First edition, first printing of Mezger's monumental chronicle of Salzburg, covering the years 582…-1687 and containing the lives of the archbishops and abbots of the Benedictine Abbey of St Peter. Among the many fine engraved plates by Philipp Kilian, Melchior and Johanna Sibylla Küsell (after Johann Friedrich Perret) are a splendid, large-sized view of Gastein, views of the Cathedral Square, Court Square, and Main Square, as well as numerous Baroque triumphal arches. Of the five copies auctioned during the last two decades, one contained a mere five engravings, the others none at all. As compared with the list of plates as provided by Nebehay/Wagner, our copy wants the suite of St Gertrude's Chapel and the hermitage of St Maximus, the two tomb epitaphs (as well as another plate seen only in copies issued after 1699), but includes a different arch not listed there. Further departing from Nebehay/Wagner, the large-format engraving of the procession is captioned with a legend printed from a separate copper plate, dating the event to 18 October 1682. "Die Kupferstichbeilagen in den verschiedenen Exemplaren variieren sehr stark. Alle 25 Tafeln konnten bisher noch in keinem Exemplar festgestellt werden. Insbesondere die Tafel, die eine Datierung von 1699 aufweist, kann selbstverständlich nur in Exemplaren, die nach dieser Zeit herausgegeben wurden, vorkommen" (Nebehay/W.). The single "Apologia" leaf and the 18 pages at the end with separate pagination, also listed by Nebehay/W., have not been attested in any other copy (and are ignored by VD 17): they appear to form an occasional appendix that does not belong to the work proper. - Pagination reverts to p. 551 after p. 552, p. 1206 leaps ahead to 1209, thus 1278 pp. (and not 1280, as often stated in error: quire Xxxxxxx comprises only three leaves); thus complete. - Binding a little stained, chafed and bumped. A few professionally repaired tears to plates, 2 ff. showing slight edge flaws with modern repairs. Occasional light waterstaining. Wants clasps. - From the Augustinian monastery of Ramsau near Haag, with ownership to title-page and presentation note from praesul Francis aus dem Kloster Reichenau, dat. 1693, auf dem fliegenden Vorsatz. - VD 17, 12:127505M. Von 1658 an lehrte er zunächst als Gymnasialprofessor am Akademischen Gymnasium Salzburg, von 1662 an dann als Professor für Theologie an der Universitä Salzburg.
