En resa som kantas av… allt från sakligt avbildade blomster, fantasifulla sammanställningar av växter från hela världen, blommor avbildade på glas och keramik till fotografiska blomsterstycken. Här ges även möjlighet att glänta på dörren till en fascinerande och ständigt föränderlig blomstersymbolvärld. Ett litet symbollexikon finns också i boken. Renässansens blomstermåleri utvecklades ur flera bildtraditioner. I de medeltida manuskriptens marginaler hittar man smultronplantor, liljor och violer. Praktfulla botaniska planschverk illustrerades av framstående målare. Konstnärer, botaniker, illustratörer och bokutgivare kände varandra och inspirerade varandra. - - - Man avbildade de exotiska växter som importerades från fjärran länder. Blomsterbuketter av Jan Breughel och Ambrosius Bosschaert kan liknas vid uppslagsverk över sällsynta plantor. Läsaren får också tillfälle att återupptäcka den dolda symboliken i blomstermålarnas verk. - - - Under 1700-talet tog konstnärerna gärna sin utgångspunkt i Linnés revolutionerande 'Systema Naturae', växternas sexualsystem. Under romantiken blev blomstermåleriet främst en 'kvinnlig' konstart. - - - Kring sekelskiftet 1900 hade konstnärer som Manet och van Gogh börjat närma sig ett mer abstrakt blomstermåleri. I boken möter vi flera av den moderna konstens stora blomsterskildrare såsom Emil Nolde, Georgia O'Keeffe och Robert Mapplethorpe.
