This book is a record of the lives and experiences of characters living at a time of great social and political change during the onset of World War I. The author deftly paints a picture of the era, the social tensions, and the dramatic impact of war on communities, families, and individuals. The novel explores the social and political turmoil that occurs when the traditional structures of society are disrupted and questions the impact on society when individuals must make impossible choices between duty and personal life, allegiances to country or family, and sacrificing the needs of one for the beliefs of another. The book also examines the role of social, gender, and economic class in the early years of the twentieth century. This is a powerful, insightful, and thought-provoking story that deserves a wide audience. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
