Even OT is left with a number of problems when tackling German vowel fronting - because the process seems to originate from around the interface of phonology and morphology; because the phenomenon only seems to behave in more or less generalizable patterns; and because there is a lot of inter-speaker and intraspeaker variation. This paper will start out by describing umlauting and umlaut-triggering conditions in some detail. The description will be followed by a brief overview of the most dominant ideas that had been brought forward in pre-OT literature, and the paper will close with a suggestion of a possible constraint-ranking responsible for umlauting, not forgetting the problems that remain even in an OT-based account.

This language sketch will make an attempt at outlining Daco-Romanian. Daco- Romanian is one of four types of Balkan Romance, and among these it is by far the mostspoken - Daco-Romanian (hereafter referred to as Romanian again for reasons of simplicity) has some 21 million speakers, most of whom live in today's Romania and Moldavia, while the other three types are spoken by only a few thousand speakers each. Romanian itself has two principal dialects, Moldavian and Muntenian. The latter is the one that underlies the literary language that developed in the 18th century and it is based on the language spoken in Bucharest, and it is also the dialect this phonetic approach will come closest to.

The aim is to make people who are already familiar with the general phonetic patterns of German and English aware of how extremely different Swabian, as an example of one of the many and diverse dialects of German, can sound from the textbook Standard German that is generally taught - for a good reason, of course, since the standard variety, like in most languages, is the only variety that has an agreed upon spelling and it will be the most widely understood. Accompanied by a number of speech samples that will illustrate the phonemic sounds of Swabian and give a general feeling for the dialect, the sections on consonants and vowels will focus on the major differences between Standard German and Swabian, and on what sounds in the inventory of English may prove helpful in the pronunciation of Swabian. First of all, however, we should turn towards how Swabian is located, that is locally, but also concerning its linguistic background and surroundings.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Sociology - Consumption and Advertising, grade: 1,0, State University of New York at Stony Brook (Linguistics), course: Sociolinguistics Seminar, language: English, abstract: Gemanagte DachfondsDie Office in your Pocket-LösungPower ist nichts ohne KontrolleTo any native English speaker, the slogans above have to seem remarkable, mostly because of the obvious mix of English and German. What might be most remarkable about them, however, is the 'very lack of remarkability with which they are received' (KELLY-HOLMES 67) by German consumers when they are encountered as parts of magazine advertisements. Along with numerous other examples, these three items were extracted from the acclaimed weekly German news magazine 'Der Spiegel' in order to get a clear picture of which effects English has and which role it plays in German advertisement. This paper will argue that English has an effect on virtually all of the 114 ads examined in the Spiegel issues of 4/11 and 4/18 2005, even on the ones that do not contain any English themselves. Furthermore, it will show that the effect English has on German ads extends beyond the concepts usually related with English, like technology, modernity, or science. This is a finding similar to the one suggested by MARTIN in a study on English influences on French advertisements. In her study, she also stresses that the register of advertisement is a very special one due to its one-way form of communication (MARTIN 376). Since the hearer remains hearer and can never take over the floor, he is not required to have any active knowledge of the language used in ads. This way, language can become a tool and a symbol all by itself, while the content can become secondary - language can turn into a form without meaning. In how far this is true in the case of English in German ads will be a final concern of this paper.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Tubingen, course: Proseminar II: Jane Austen, language: English, abstract: Decisive parts of both plot and meaning of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice are conveyed by means of conversations. 'In them the word becomes an authentic deed', as H. BABB puts it. In linguistic terms, conversation is discourse - and discourse is necessarily social discourse. Taking into consideration that Jane Austen's age 'was an age of society's predominance, when man was viewed primarily as a social creature', and that ''ways of putting things', or simply language usage, are part of the very stuff that social relationships are made of', it is not hard to realize how much importance lies in the way the characters in Pride and Prejudice express themselves. Therefore, when he focuses on the various linguistic aspects of civility in Pride and Prejudice, the reader can throw light on the novel from a different angle.Civility is derived from the Latin word 'civilis', meaning 'of or pertaining to citizens'. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, it is 'behaviour proper to the intercourse of civilized people; ordinary courtesy or politeness, as opposed to rudeness of behaviour; decent respect, consideration'. J. HARRIS notices that Jane Austen 'explores [Richardson's] important word civil', without giving her finding consequence enough to go into much detail. However, when the word root civil itself occurs 'over seventy times in the novel', seventyeight times to be precise (while occurring only forty times in Sense and Sensibility, for example), and words closely related to civility appear in over one-hundred-and-fifty instances in the course of the novel, it becomes clear that the aspects of civility deserve a closer look. Because the social scheme has changed significantly since the time Jane Austen wrote her novels, the vocabulary related to civility has undergone some significant changes as well. The gaps in meaning between politeness, civility and gentleness have been diminished or have ceased to exist altogether in some speakers' vocabulary. The aim of this paper is therefore to pinpoint the different notions of civility and words related with civility as they are employed by Jane Austen in Pride and Prejudice. In the course, most attention will be paid to Mr Collins, a character who miraculously manages to be an epitome of both politeness and rudeness.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Freiburg, course: HS Morphology, language: English, abstract: As one of its most important theories, Functional Typology (FT) is a highly empirical approach to all fields of linguistics. Joseph Greenberg of Stanford University, the classic representative of FT, wrote Language Universals, the seminal work that constituted FT, in 19661. FT is called typology because it classifies languages into types according to their features as opposed to generic classifications that group languages according to their language families. It is called functional because it searches for universal tendencies in languages based on the assumption that these tendencies are brought about by the need to fulfill certain functions in communication. FT is thereby the counter approach to Generative Grammar (Functionalism), which assumes that there is a Universal Grammar every human is born with. As a result of trying to find universal categories of linguistic behavior, functional typologists try to extract valid principles by synchronic empirical testing and generalizations. They call these extracted principles universals. One of these universals is Universal 28: Universal 28: If both the derivation and inflection follow the root, or they both precede the root, the derivation is always between the root and the inflection.According to this Greenbergian universal, we should expect never to see a case in which a root is followed first by an inflectional and then by a derivational suffix. It also excludes cases in which a root is directly preceded by an inflectional prefix which is preceded by a derivational prefix in turn. There appear to be a number of such cases in different languages, however. The goal of this paper is to examine in how far Universal 28 can be saved in view of the cases that have been brought forth in the literature to contradict it. Crucial to this examination will be to first clarify the differences between the central terms 'inflection' and 'derivation', and how the two interact.

(both GOLLIN 2001: 114)1 In a letter he assured her: I never owned a picture in my life; yet pictures have always been among the earthly possessions (and they are spiritual possessions too) which I most coveted. (.) I have often felt as if I could be a painter, only I am sure I could never handle a brush;- now my Dove will show me the images of my inward eye, beautiful and etherealized by her own spirit. (GOLLIN 2001: 115)This essay will first try to outline whether these lines are just flattery or in how far the visual arts really played an important role in Hawthorne's life, and since Hawthorne was of course quite able himself to lay out before the world the images of his inward eye with great success, it will then try to show what visual techniques Hawthorne incorporated in his work, particularly in his classic The Scarlet Letter. It will be seen that, rather than creating a colorful tableau, as Hawthorne was also capable of doing in other tales (GOLLIN 1991: 53)2, he creates an atmosphere in The Scarlet Letter in which 'the color pattern (.) is essentially a contrast of red against black' (MATTHIESSEN 1945: 265)3, while the truly dominant technique Hawthorne puts to use is chiaroscuro, the application of light and shade.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Examination Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1, University of Freiburg, language: English, abstract: When In Cold Blood was first published, critics had a hard time categorizing the book. Capote himself held that he had written a 'nonfiction novel (Capote in Plimpton 1966: 2)' and that he had thereby created an altogether new genre. In the subtitle, Capote stresses his central claim regarding this new genre, assuring the reader that what she is about to delve into is 'a true account of a multiple murder and its consequences (Capote 2000 [1966]).' As will be seen in the opening chapter, criticism of In Cold Blood has therefore to a great degree revolved around Capote's and the book's adherence to this assertion of truth. The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary on Historical Principles (SOED) lists as the three first entries under the head word 'true':true /tru:/1 Steadfast in allegiance, loyal; faithful, constant (.).2 Honest, honourable, upright, virtuous; straightforward, sincere (.).3 Of a statement, report, etc.: consistent with fact; conforming with reality (.).The following investigation of In Cold Blood and of the biopic based on Capote's work on the book, Bennett Miller's Capote (2005), will proceed along the lines of these three aspects of the definition, questioning Capote's claim of rendering a 'true account.'The genre chapter and large parts of the ensuing discussion of In Cold Blood will be especially concerned with the definition's third aspect, In Cold Blood's consistency with fact and its conformity with reality. The question will be raised as to whether or not a true account of real events is possible at all, and in what ways Capote and other writers of New Journalism, as the genre is most frequently called today, have tried to achieve such true accounts.
