This book concerns the Virginia Resolutions of 1796, which proposed a series of constitutional amendments to limit the power of the federal government. These amendments sought to protect individual liberty and state sovereignty. The author examines the debates surrounding the resolutions, analyzing the arguments for and against each proposed amendment. The book provides historical context, explores the political landscape of the time, and discusses the significance of these amendments within the broader framework of American constitutional history. By delving into these debates, the author illuminates the ongoing struggle between federal power and individual rights, highlighting the importance of understanding these tensions as they continue to shape the American political landscape. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. No Binding. Condizione: Good. Original publisher's beige paper pamphlet. No date, circa 1808 (dated 1808 at end of pamphlet). 5 1/2" x 8 1/2." Ten pages, complete. Pages are intact overall but have some chipping along edges, browning, and spots of discoloration. A Good copy. This pamphlet contains an ardent plea in the form of a essay co-authored by members of Pennsylvania's Committee of Correspondence, namely, Michael Leib, John Dorsey, James Engle, Michael Bright, Robert McMullen, Thomas Leiper, and William Duane. The main subject of the essay is the upcoming 1808 presidential election. The Committee addresses several ongoing contentions in Pennsylvania regarding the upcoming election and the "Lancaster Convention." There have apparently been various smear campaigns against politicians the Committee supports. In response to this, the Committee makes an appeal to Pennsylvania citizens to not be deceived by baseless propaganda. The Committee summarizes that the "basis of our government [is] the disinterested sacrifice of individual interests for the preservation of those of the whole people." They ask that Pennsylvania citizens abide by this principle wherein the few do not overrule the many. The Committee references many people and events relating to the 1808 presidential election. For example, the Committee comes to the defense of Simon Snyder and acknowledges its unanimous vote for him as the 3rd Governor of Pennsylvania. They also come to the defense of Pennsylvania elector William Montgomery. The Committee reprints allegations from their opponents who had claimed that Montgomery, Samuel Maclay, and other electors acted in a subversive manner regarding the nomination of James Madison as the Democratic-Republican presidential candidate and instead nominated George Clinton as president and James Monroe as vice president. The Committee pointedly counters that no such discussion of Madison, Clinton, or Monroe ever happened at the Lancaster Convention. The Committee also clarifies that it accepts and supports the nomination of Madison. This pamphlet overall is a defense of the Committee's interests and its political allies such as Clinton, Montgomery, and Monroe.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book scrutinizes the Baltimore Riots of 1812, their root causes, and the conduct of leaders in government and militia during this fraught time. The author studies the suppression of the Federal Republican newspaper and the trial and acquittal of the perpetrators of the first violent riot as contributing to the rapidly escalating tensions. When the paper's editor attempted to reestablish the paper in Baltimore and defended his right to do so with an armed force, they found themselves besieged by an angry mob. City officials proved unable or unwilling to quell the violence, which culminated in the storming of the building and the brutal murders of a former Revolutionary War general, among others. The book concludes that many of the incidents that took place during the Baltimore Riots had a profound impact on the freedom of the press, the functioning of the justice system, and the rule of law. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Hardcover. Condizione: fair. 4to. 185 leaves. Black cloth. Red edges. Illustrated title-page with Moses and Aaron on the sides and David killing Goliath at the bottom. Commentary on selections of the Zohar and other kabbalistic texts by Mordacai Ashkenazi published with the aid of his teacher Abraham Rovigo. These two kabbalists were both secret followers of the messianic claimant Sabbatai Sevi. Despite Sabbatai's conversion to Islam in 1666 and death in 1676, many of his followers continued to believe in him and worked to spread their particular heterodox brand of Judaism in defiance of the rabbinic establishment. As cover for his Sabbatian agenda, Ashkenazi claimed that "Eshel Avraham" was simply a new interpretation of the Kabbalah based on his prophetic dreams. Ultimately this book is an important example of the success of the early eighteenth century Sabbatian underground to print books under the nose of the rabbinic authorities before it came out into the open with the printing of Nehemiah Hayon's "Migdal Oz." Text in Hebrew. Backstrip missing, but the book is still intact. Bottom corner chipped. Title-page torn and bottom strengthened. Slight worming to front leaves. Overall in fair condition.
