cloth. Huxley, Elspeth (illustratore). 8vo. cloth. xx, 187+(1) pages. With a foreword by Elspeth Huxley. First edition. The fifth volume in the Winchester Bibliographies of Twentieth Century Writers series. Mrs. Huxley's writing life began at the age of fourteen when she sent anonymous articles, often with her own photographs, to the EAST AFRICAN STANDARD and other periodicals. By the age of seventeen she had written ninety-six published articles for editors who often had no idea who she was. Mrs. Huxley went on to write over forty-seven books, including the intriguing bestseller THE FLAME TRESS OF THIKA, which was turned into a successful TV series in Britain, America and over thirty other countries. This bibliography describes the evolution of a remarkable writer, as well as gifted photographer, whose insight into people and her penetrating humor cast invaluable light on the Colonial and post-Colonial era in Africa. Illustrated.

Parochial collections and their care; E. Parochial libraries: reports and recommendations; index. First Edited by Neil Ker. Revised Edition: 2004. Because of the unauthorized sale, loss, or deteriorating condition of parochial libraries in the 1930s and 1940s, a postal survey of surviving collections was undertaken which resulted in a detailed report and directory finally published under the general editorship of Neil Ker as The Parochial Libraries of the Church of England: Report of a Committee appointed by the Central Council for the Care of Churches to Investigate the Number and Condition of Parochial Libraries belonging to the Church of England, with a Historical Introduction, Notes on Early Printed Books and their Care and an Alphabetical List of Parochial Libraries Past and Present, by Faith Press in 1959. This book is a thorough revision of that work and incorporates much of its apparatus while reflecting new discoveries and recent research. The Directory in particular has been greatly expanded to include libraries established up to c. 1900, and, especially, a broad sample of what have come to be known as desk-libraries, with one or more pre-1700 prescribed books." Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. Jermain Defoe is one of the most exciting and engimatic footballers in the English Premier League. From his early career at Charlton via Portsmouth, Tottenham and England, Defoe's incredible skill and finishing has won him legions of fans. Joining the Charlton youth academy aged 14, Defoe made a controversial move to West Ham, where he turned professional at the age of just 16. Three years later, following a loan spell at Bournemouth where he achieved the incredible feat of scoring 10 goals in 10 consecutive games, he was West Ham's top scorer as the club secured a seventh-place finish in the Premier League. in 2004, Defoe's prodigious talent took him to Tottenham, where he continued to dazzle with vital goals and stunning performances. The arrival of Darren Bent in 2007 put pressure on Defoe to fight for his place in the first team, however, and in January 2008 he signed to Portsmouth for GBP6million. Although he scorned in each of his first five games for the club, and also scored in Portsmouth's first ever appearance in a major European competition, Defoe returned to Spurs in January 2009, following manager Harry Redknapp's move to the North London club. Fans were delighted and they were soon rewarded as Defoe continued in a rich vein of goalscoring form. On 22 November 2009, Defoe became only the third player in Premier League history to score five goals in the same match, as Spurs trashed Wigan 9-1, prompting Harry Redknapp to hail him as the greatest finisher in the country. Defoe has also contributed vital goals and impressive performances for England. Having been controversially left out of Sven-Goran Eriksson's squad for the World Cup in 2006, Defoe staked his claim for a regular international place under Steve McClaren and fought his way into Fabio Capello's squad for the 2010 World Cup. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

First Edition. large octavo, blue cloth. 490pp. Bibliographical Society, From the Foreword: "Many of the books, as one would expect, are theological, but other subjects can be found. At Hatfield Broad Oak, for example, there are books on history, biography, medicine, philosophy and travel, and multilingual dictionaries. At Heathfield the collection includes books on classical scholarship, and works on agriculture, household management, carriers' timetables, heraldry and English literature.[Michael Perkin] has enlarged the scope of the original work significantly, and brought to fruition a study which will be the standard reference point on parochial libraries for many years to come." A Postscript, 2000 briefly outlines research in this field over the last 50 years or so, and there are a number of new lists and tables, one including statistical information. The index is a key to the whole book and should be especially consulted for references to former owners and donors and subject strengths.
