This issue was probably offered for separate sale, without the series title page for the "Sammlung der besten deutschen prosaischen Schriftsteller und Dichter" -- hundert und dreyzehenter Theil. The first section is a life of the poet: "Johann Benjamin Michaelis Leben / von Christian Heinrich Schmid" -- pp. [7]-64. Collation: a-d8 A-S8 (- a1 & 2). Neat signature of a previous owner in ink on the top margin of the title page. Johann Benjamin Michaelis (1746 - 1772) was a German poet. While studying medicine, he became friends with Johann Gottfried Dyck and Christian Heinrich Schmid and came into contact with his later patron Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim in 1766. His studies were interrupted by a long illness and he did not return to Leipzig until 1768. During this time he worked on Schmid's Anthologie der Deutschen (1769) and the Almanac of the German Muses (Leipziger Musenalmanach). Michaelis received a position as Hofmeister in 1769 and in 1770 became an editor at the newspaper Hamburgischer Correspondent. Through G. E. Lessing's mediation, he began writing for the Seylersche Schauspiel-Gesellschaft. He traveled with them from Hamburg to Lubeck, Hanover, Hildesheim and Osnabruck. In 1771 he settled at Gleim in Halberstadt and remained there until his death.
