"Le célèbre poème d'Adam Mickiewicz, Pan Thaddeus, écrit en polonais et promu au rang d'épopée nationale, commence par ces mots : 'Ô Lituanie, ma patrie. ', mais les trois partages successifs du pays entre la Russie, la Prusse et l'Autriche dont le dernier en 1795 rayèrent la Pologne de la carte et interrompirent cette polonisation spontanée. Si le pays disparut, la culture et l'identité survécurent. Les intellectuels s'efforcèrent de renforcer une communauté imaginée et de la préserver contre l'oubli. Un nationalisme ethnique fabriqua le cliché du Polonais catholique, opposé aux Rusyns (ou Ukrainiens, par la suite) et aux Russes orthodoxes, ainsi qu'aux Prussiens (ou Allemands) protestants, et l'Eglise catholique fut érigée en gardienne de la tradition.
