Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Many schools have to contend with the tension between an inflexible building and constantly changing requirements for use. With this in mind, WiMBY! (Welcome into My Backyard!, a Rotterdam-based organization for revitalizing post-war housing areas) commissioned three designers to develop "SchoolParasites" as an attractive alternative to the usual trailer-type provisional classrooms. "SchoolParasites" are provisional structures, flexible in application and striking in design; the first three were erected in the Rotterdam suburb of Hoogvliet in spring 2004. The aim of the program is to put these models into production and to make them available to every school in the Netherlands and abroad. "Not the Trailer" documents the designs of Barend Koolhaas, Onix and Christoph Seyferth. It also considers far-reaching questions on the interaction of education and architecture, on the inventiveness of the schools themselves, on permanence and temporariness, and on how intelligent, flexible solutions can play a role in the restructuring of post-war urban areas. Softcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. Almere, the Netherlands' newest town, took a significant step towards maturity with its recently completed city center, designed by Rem Koolhaas, leader of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (O.M.A.), the Netherlands' most internationally oriented architectural practice. Compared to such high-profile O.M.A. achievements as Euralille and Generic City, Koolhaas' scheme for Almere is an interesting departure as it succeeds both in the contexts of old Dutch towns and contemporary metropolitan design. The scheme for the Almere city center shows Koolhaas at work in the context of the old Dutch townscape and the dynamic of the "polder model": it shows how O.M.A absorbed Dutchness -- and still stuck to its principles. In addition to documenting the city center design, this book explores the design process involving the city, the property developers, and the project leaders. Also included are the designs made to flesh out the master plan, amongst them a theater by Kazuyo Sejima, housing by Claus & Kaan and Frits van Dongen, William Alsop's pop/rock center, Benthem Crouwel's business center, O.M.A.'s parking garages and cinema, and the public space design by DS Landschapsarchitecten. The text is in English. From the cover: Happy: Cities and Public Happiness in Post-War Europe is the result of a fascinating search for expressions and representations of happiness in the European city during the second half of the twentieth century. Images of joy in which there is a relationship between three elements--happiness, the city and space--are collated and analyzed. Drawing extensively from Europe as a whole, from the Ukraine in the east to the Netherlands in the west, Rovanieimi in the north to Marbella in the south, this study by experts on more than 50 cities was coordinated by an international research team, and presents a picture that transcends the incidental and reveals fundamental motifs in the dynamics of our thinking about the city. Happy presents an abundance of postcards, posters and photographs, and is a seminal exploration of the entire European territory using the theme of happiness. This stunning, unique overview of 50 years of post-War European history relating to one of the world's most universal themes leaves readers informed, pensive, entertained, and above all, happy.(3.9 JM HOZ 403/b5 Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾".
