Hardback. Condizione: New. The value of Plutarch's perception of physical reality and his attitude towards the natural spectacle. Plutarch was very interested in the natural world around him, not only in terms of its elementary composition and physical processes, but also with respect to its providential ordering and 'wonders'. His writings teach us a lot about his perception of physical reality and about his attitude to the natural spectacle. He found his greatest inspiration in the ontological and epistemological framework of Plato's Timaeus, but a wide range of other authors were also of seminal interest to his project. Clearly, the highly literary value of Plutarch's natural philosophical writings should not be underrated. It is therefore not surprising that recently scholars have started to reassess the ancient scientific value of Plutarch's natural philosophical writings. Natural Spectaculars aims to give further impetus to this dynamic by treating several aspects of Plutarch's natural philosophy which have remained unexplored up to now. This publication is GPRC-labeled (Guaranteed Peer-Reviewed Content). Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - What potential relevance does the experience of Graeco-Roman Antiquity have to the vastly expanding field of the Medical Humanities and its contribution to 'humanizing' contemporary medicine and healthcare And again, how can the insights from the relatively young Medical Humanities enhance our understanding of the ancient Greek and Roman past, a past often still surprisingly relevant today In an attempt to critically and creatively approach these two complementary questions, the central aim of this book is to promote a constructive dialogue between the disciplines of the Classics (Classical Studies), on the one hand, and the broadly defined Medical Humanities (or Health Humanities), on the other. Much of the effort of the contributions gathered in this volume goes to putting past and present into conversation, in order to discover continuities and contrasts with present-day perspectives while looking for the contemporary relevance and meaning of the ancient materials.…

Hardback. Condizione: New. The role of natural science in the Roman Imperial Era In his Quaestiones naturales, Plutarch unmistakeably demonstrates a huge interest in the world of natural phenomena. The work of this famous intellectual and philosopher from Chaeronea consists of forty-one natural problems that address a wide variety of questions, sometimes rather peculiar ones, and answers pertaining to ancient Greek physics, including problems related to the fields of zoology, botany, meteorology and their respective subdisciplines. By providing a thorough study of and commentary on this generally neglected text, written by one of the most influential and prolific writers from Antiquity, this book contributes to our better understanding of Plutarch's natural scientific programme and, the condition and role of ancient natural science in the Roman Imperial Era in general. This publication is GPRC-labeled (Guaranteed Peer-Reviewed Content).…

Hardback. Condizione: New. This volume provides a set of in-depth case studies about the role of questions and answers (QandA) in ancient Greek medical writing from its Hippocratic beginnings up to, and including, Late Antiquity. The use of QandA formulas is widely attested in ancient Greek medical texts, casting an intriguing light on its relevance for the medical art at large, and for ancient medical practice, education, and research in specific (diagnostics, didactics, dialectics). The book aims to break new grounds by exploring, for the first time, the wide complexity of this phenomenon while introducing a coherent approach. In so doing, it not only covers highly specialized medical treatises but also non-canonical authors and texts, including anonymous papyrus fragments and collections of problems.…
