The title page has offsetting from the portrait, the rest of the pages have light, occasional foxing, else G. Sabin 481. The author, (1823-1903), a Methodist Episcopal clergyman, was born in Philadelphia. The family moved to Illinois in 1838. His father was often visited by traveling preachers, among them Peter Cartwright. Their tales of circuit riding in the backwoods, fraught with dangers from the weather, wild animals, and occasional Indians, strengthened the author's desire to become a preacher as well. By 1845, he was living in Baltimore and acting as chaplain of Congress. From an eye injury suffered as a boy, he eventually lost his sight in both eyes due to infection. He wrote several books about the early settlement of Kentucky and other regions of the Ohio Valley, describing frontier customs and manners, with accounts of Daniel Boone, Simon Kenton, James Harrod and others.
