"Subconscious City examines… the often hidden underpinnings of Winnipeg - its myths, it's vacant lots, it's forgotten communities, its hidden gems - and reveals a complicated picture of place. Created as a companion to the contemporary art exhibition of the same name curated by Shawna Dempsey and Lori Millan, this publication delves into the nature of our current and physical landscape, and its power to shape identity. Nine writers explore the interiors and exteriors of Winnipeg: are people; our neighborhood; our treatment of what we prefer remains unseen; and our predilection for paving over what is deemed undesirable. This volume includes poetry and lyrics by John K. Samson, new fiction by Guy Maddin, creative meditations by Jeanne Randolph and Marvin Francis, and essays by Sigrid Dahle, Molly Johnson and Richard Milgrom, Claudine Mazjels, and Dempsey and Milkan, ranging in topic from the benefits of zero growth to the Aboriginal urban experience. Texts are richly illustrated with artwork from the exhibition by K.C. Adams, Keith Berens, Eleanor Bond, Sarah Crawley, Leah Decter, Richard Dyck, William Eakin, Walter Forsberg, Noam Gonick, Richard Holden, Simon Hughes, Krisjanis Kaktins-Gorsline, Bonnie Marin, David McMillan, jake moore, Kristin Sara Nelson, Grace Nickel, Freya Bjorg Olafson, Linda Pearce, Matthew Rankin, Robert Sim, Scott Stephens, Jennifer Stillwell, Diana Thorneycroft, Rachael Tycoles, Jordan Van Sewell, and David Wityk. Thse artists have always been vocal about the complex and marvelous city that Winnipeg is as well as what it could be. Through their activism and their art they assert inspired and nuanced images of place." - cover text.
