Ouvrage orné de 14 compositions originales d'Alfred Le Petit hors texte, coloriées au pochoir. Pierre Mille (1864-1941) fut l'un des écrivains et journalistes parmi les plus éminents de son époque. Il partit pour Madagascar en 1896, comme chef de cabinet du secrétaire général, puis parcourut le monde comme correspondant du Temps, du Journal des Débats, de la Revue des Deux Mondes. Journaliste, sociologue, annaliste, romancier, il a beaucoup produit et dans tous les genres. Il fut un écrivain de race au style pittoresque et coloré, avec à l'occasion, de magnifiques envolées poétiques. La plupart de ses livres concernent l'Outre-mer.
