"The story of the cerebrospinal fluid can conveniently be divided into two historical periods: I. from the dawn of history to the publication of Magendie's papers which made freely available the observation of Cotugno that there was a spinal as well as a cerebral fluid; 2. from the publication of Key and Retzius' great monograph in 1875 to the present day. Anatomical knowledge of the pathways followed by the fluid really began with the publication of Key and Retzius' work, and we have accordingly dealt with the long and complex history of knowledge of the fluid prior to Key and Retzius in a single historical introduction. This introduction has of necessity had to be brief in order not to disturb the balance of the book as a whole. The remaining chapters of the book are devoted to a consideration of the anatomy of the structures which are generally implicated in the formation, circulation, and absorption of the fluid. In Chapter II, we have assembled the scanty information upon the morphology of the fluid itself, and the remaining chapters are arranged to follow as nearlv as possible the most probable anatomical course of the fluid from formation to absorption. The greatest name in the more recent history of the cerebrospinal fluid is undoubtedly that of Lewis Weed. His observations upon the physiology of the fluid are deservedly famous and had far-reaching effects upon the expansion of the science of neurosurgery. It is not generally realized, however, that his concepts of the anatomy of the structures involved in the production, circulation, and absorption of the cerebrospinal fluid were derived from earlier observers such as Key and Retzius, Mott and Tuke. Some of these observations are plainly erroneous in the light of modern research, and it is therefore unfortunate that Weed's papers should have served as a source of information upon the anatomy of the circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid. ."
