Hardback. Condizione: Good. Meet the lovable but dysfunctional Lake family over the four days that will make or break them When Vance Lake--broke, jobless, and recently dumped--takes refuge with twin brother Craig back home on Cape Cod, he unwittingly finds himself smack in the middle of a crisis that would test the bonds of even the most cohesive family, let alone the Lakes. Craig is strangely mournful and angry at equal turns. His exasperated wife, Gina, is on the brink of an affair. At the center of it all is seventeen-year-old Amanda: adored niece, rebellious daughter, and stubborn stepdaughter. She's also pregnant. Told in alternating points of view by each member of this colorful New England clan, and infused with the quiet charm of the Cape in the off-season, The News from the End of the World follows one family into a crucible of pent-up resentments, old and new secrets, and memories long buried. Only by coming to terms with their pasts, both separately and together, do they stand a chance of emerging intact.…

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Poetry. African & African American Studies. Soon after the 2016 presidential election, Sixteen Rivers Press, a shared-work collective of Northern California poets, conducted a nationally advertised call for submissions, seeking unpublished poems that would respond to the cultural, moral, and political rifts that now divide our country: poems of resistance and resilience, witness and vision, that embody what it means to be a citizen in a time when our democracy is threatened. In a matter of weeks, the press received over two thousand poems. The work came from across the country, from red states and blue states, high schools and nursing homes, big cities and small towns. At the same time, the poet-members of the press were asked to nominate poems. These poems could be old or new, published or not, the poets living or dead--anything from anywhere that spoke to this moment in the voice of poetry. In this way, we gathered another three hundred poems, ranging from Virgil and Dante to Claudia Rankine and Mai Der Vang, from Milton to Merwin, from Bai Juyi to last Thursday's just-posted Poem-a-Day. This anthology is a blend of poems from these two sources, each of its nine sections a kind of town-hall meeting where citizen-poets gather to raise their voices, now raucous, now muted, now lyric, now plain: voices responding with dissent and consoling with praise, perspective, vision, and hope. Around 1950, Pablo Neruda wrote the poem, Am rica, I do not call your name without hope to a Latin America in crisis. In this anthology, Dean Rader's poem, in the spirit of Neruda but in the time of Trump, speaks, under the same title, to our America: this is for you and your fear, your tar; / for the white heat in your skin and / for your blue bones that one day may sing. The title of our book echoes this cry: America, listen to what your poets are saying. Are we the corrosive, racist, authoritarian regime that the 2016 election brought to power, or are we a democracy, that fragile, imperfect form of government that must be constantly guarded in the struggle for equality, justice and freedom? In resistance and resilience, and not without hope, America, we call your name.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. "Compelling . . . The strength of Brand New Human Being is its realistic portrayal of trauma and its aftermath." --Washington Post Stay-at-home dad Logan Pyle is holding his life together by a thread: his larger-than-life father, Gus, has just died, his wife is distant, and his kindergarten-age son has regressed to drinking from a baby bottle and sucking his thumb. Complicating matters further is Bennie, Gus's beautiful young widow, with whom Logan has a troubled past. When the thread finally snaps, Logan's actions threaten to tear the family he treasures apart. Carried by Logan's wry, original voice, this moving debut follows one man's journey from child to parent. "Introspective and honest . . . Miller's novel is sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking, but always a worthy, exciting read." --Siobhan Fallon, author of You Know When the Men Are Gone "I devoured this novel. Miller's debut is funny, fast-paced and poignant, and it depicts a father-son relationship unlike any I've read before." --Jim Gavin, author of Middle Men. …

"My favorite kind of book, bighearted and full of complicated flawed characters stumbling through love and life, making hard choices, making mistakes, and making the reader fall in love with every one of them. I loved this novel!" -- Ann Hood, author of The Book That Matters Most "With wonderfully crafted characters and expert pacing, Miller has written the kind of narrative that readers crave: a beautifully written, hard-to-put-down story that will stay long after the book has been closed." -- Booklist  . …

Paperback. Condizione: Good. When your life needs to change- What do you keep and what do you leave behind? When your life and your lifestyle have brought you to this place of illness, pain, and suffering, it is foolish to believe that returning to that which made you ill will ever make you well again . . . This is the time to change everything. -Shaylah Vishnu Jeanne's life had not been a fairytale- not by a long shot. She had survived the devastating loss of her first husband, followed by a litany of lies, betrayal and manipulation by another man who was a husband in name only, her own life-threatening injury and illness, and a grand injustice by the legal system. Bitter and broken this feisty woman decided that her life and her happiness were worth fighting for. So began the adventure, one that forced her to face the world again and find a way to heal all that she had come through. On this rugged path, Jeanne walked out of the darkness and into the light, consciously embracing her own personal wisdom. She found a way to return to health, inner peace and along the way discovered a life of happiness. Come along on the journey as she has much to teach us on- The Healing Path Home.…
