Presumed second edition. vii, 139, [ii], 436pp., frontispiece and 7 plates (including a list of Martyrs), and tail piece illustrations. The Bass Rock is an island in the outer part of the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland, situated approximately 1 mile offshore, and 3 miles north-east of North Berwick. The rock is uninhabited, but historically has been settled by an early Christian hermit, and the site of an important castle, which after the Commonwealth period was used as a prison. The island belongs to Sir Hew Hamilton-Dalrymple, whose family acquired it in 1706, and before to the Lauder family for almost six centuries. This book is a study of the Bass Rock, written by four respected authors. It starts with a History of the Bass by Thomas M'Crie (1797-1875), a Presbyterian minister and church historian; this is followed by an account of the Geology of the Bass by Hugh Miller (1802-1856), the famous Scottish geologist and writer; there is then a fascinating section on the Martyrs of the Bass (historical notices of 39 prisoners confined on the Bass) by James Anderson. The book closes with notices of the natural history of the rock - zoology by Professor John Fleming and botany by Professor John H. Balfour. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and a blind stamped illustration of the Bass Rock on both boards. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling to the boards and bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with some scattered but mostly light foxing, including some marks on the frontispiece and title-page. The plate facing page 409 and a few pages near the start and end of the book are moderately affected. There is a personal name stamp on the front free endpaper. At the time of listing there is some Bass related ephemera loosely inserted at the front of the book.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardback. Condizione: New. This book presents a global overview of the background to, and the current state of, crop protection and pest management in cotton crops. Cotton is one of the most economically important crops in the world and has been grown for centuries but maintaining high yields of good quality requires sophisticated approaches to pest management. The introduction and use of pesticides over the decades significantly increased cotton yields but lead to many adverse environmental impacts. Over time, new and alternative insecticides were developed but overuse has enabled pests to develop significant resistance. The development of genetically modified cotton varieties with toxins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis enabled much improved control of lepidopteran larvae, including bollworms, but as the toxins had no effect on sucking pests, farmers had no choice but to continue using insecticides. Also, some of the new cotton varieties developed in recent times have not adapted to different climatic conditions and the quality of cotton fibre declined as a result. This book shows the need for more research to select cotton varieties with high quality fibres suitable for different cotton growing areas and to develop integrated pest management strategies to minimise the use of pesticides. It also demonstrates the need for an inter-disciplinary approach bringing together plant breeders, entomologists, plant pathologists, agronomists and agricultural engineers to achieve high yields of high quality cotton. In the future, farmers will need to adopt new technology to determine when and how pesticides are used in conjunction with cultural and biological control strategies. · Emphasises the importance of research on growing cotton in a world experiencing climate change · Demonstrates how crucial crop protection is in achieving high yields of high quality cotton · Shows how new technology will bring major changes in how cotton is grown in the future.
