Be…lieved to be the first printing (Rand, McNally was inconsistent in marking printings in this era. This scarce edition of 'Alice' was issued as part of the Canterbury Classics series, and features an introduction by series editor, prominent educator Katharine Lee Bates (now best remembered as the author of the hymn 'America the Beautiful'). It has a strange mix in tone to today's way of thinking - according to the Introduction, the series was intended to 'help in arousing a desire for the more imaginative and inspiring legends of the Aryan race', and yet the final section - 'Suggestions to Teachers' exhorts them: 'The difficulty will arise, not in talking down to the child, but in thinking up to him. Let the spirit of the child lead you, then he will love the book and read it over and over again, laughing the wholesome laughter that has no sting in it.'.
