1st Edition. First Edition, first issue before added explanatory text on p. viii and without the engraved portrait of former Governor Samuel Morris by St. Memin "which appears erratically in this book" (Bruns). Two lithographic views, two lithographic portraits, and woodcut of a fox. viii, 127; [ii] 56, [1, errata] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Milnor served for a number of years as secretary of the Schuylkill Fishing Company, America's oldest angling group, founded in 1732 - indeed it claims to be the world's oldest social organization--and was a member of the Gloucester Fox Hunting Club, the first organized hunt club in America, founded (across the river in New Jersey) in 1766. (He was also a member of Congress 1812-1820, and in 1829 was elected Mayor of Philadelphia). His well written accounts of both organizations are full of lively anecdotes, specific incidents, and reports of various methods of hunting and fishing, not to mention a number of illustrious and interesting individuals. These two classic works are usually bound together, as is the case here. The collation conforms with the Schwerdt copy; Bruns notes the portrait is not always present. Attractive copy of a rare book. Gee, Early American Sporting Books, pp. 46-47; Henderson, pp. 178-179; Phillips p. 265; Bruns S74 "almost priceless today"; Sabin 49133; Westwood & Satchell p. 190; Schwerdt IV, p. 66; Howes M636; Biscotti, Six Centuries, p. 256 Contemporary half black morocco and marbled boards. Faint traces of rubbing at extremities, some foxing (heaviest at first and last leaves), else fine. In full red morocco folding box Two lithographic views, two lithographic portraits, and woodcut of a fox. viii, 127; [ii] 56, [1, errata] pp. 1 vols. 8vo First Edition, first issue before added explanatory text on p. viii and without the engraved portrait of former Governor Samuel Morris by St. Memin "which appears erratically in this book" (Bruns). …

Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition thus (the original was published in 1830); No. 114 of 375 copies. Two reproductions from old prints. [xii], 47, [3] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. A reprint of a rare work, with a foreword by the sporting bookseller and authority on early American sport, Ernest R. Gee. This binding is similar to those executed by Sangorski & Sutcliffe for the great Derrydale production of Woodward's Cherished Portraits, and may be counted as an unrecorded Deluxe binding. Gee advertised copies bound in this style as item 46 in his Catalogue number 10 (1927/1928) and it is probable that only a very small number of this edition were bound thus. The handful of copies we have seen (including Connett's own) bore numbers from 113 to 119. Siegel 4; Frazier M-7-a (describing copies in pink boards); Biscotti, Six Centuries, p. 256 Full reddish brown morocco gilt by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with foxhunting tools to upper board, gilt stamped dog?s heads at upper corners and fox masks at lower corners, central gilt stamped running fox, t.e.g. Some slight rubbing. Near fine Two reproductions from old prints. [xii], 47, [3] pp. 1 vols. 8vo First edition thus (the original was published in 1830); No. 114 of 375 copies. …
