Pliny the Younger's ten books of letters constitute one of antiquity's most precious epistolary treasures 247 missives to luminaries such as Tacitus and the Emperor Trajan that offer unparalleled insight into Roman life, governance, culture, and the mundane details of daily existence during the 1st and early 2nd centuries. This humanist edition presents those letters alongside the learned commentary and textual emendations of Claude de Mino (Claudius Minoas), a French jurist of the sixteenth century, whose notes transform the work into a window upon both Roman antiquity and Renaissance scholarly methods. Minoas's commentary was first published by Jean Richer in 1588; this 1598 Gueffier edition is an enlarged reissue of the same workits notes "amplified in this new edition"valued by Renaissance scholars, classicists, and those fascinated by the history of textual scholarship and the transmission of the classics from antiquity to the early modern period.Paris: François Gueffier, 1598. The title page displays Gueffier's handsome printer's markan oval medallion bearing an allegorical figure of Liberalitas with the monogram "FG"and proclaims royal privilege: "Cum gratia & Privilegio Regis." This copy is Volume II only; Volume I is lacking, which notably diminishes the value of what would otherwise be a complete set. The binding is period ochre-brown calf or basane, heavily worn with deep staining, lacunar losses, and rubbed corners; the spine features a raised-band structure with gilt decorationstylized fleurons and foliate scrollwork between the nervesand a gilt title piece reading "CAI PLINI / TOM II," though much of the leather is darkened and the gilt only partially preserved. The title page remains clean and crisp, the Gueffier device sharp and legible, though the interior exhibits the expected foxing and age-toning of a volume more than four centuries old.
