He also seeks to revisit a central question of our contemporary civilizations: the relationships between men and their living spaces. It is about… embarking on a quest for what the medieval period may have developed in this area, with the disappearance of the political frameworks of ancient empires and their Carolingian heirs. The approach adopted here is characterized by a deliberate consideration, through discourse, of the conscious and lived dimension of territory. To measure the progress made in renewing this field of research, it was necessary to start from the study of the works of the great writers of French rural history. Their vocabulary, concepts, and sensitivity have thus been analyzed. But the heart of the approach focuses on the study of the words that the people of the Middle Ages themselves used, depending on the diversity of actors, types of documents, and the chronology addressed. Having done this, one cannot today attempt to restore the lived spaces of the Middle Ages while ignoring the contributions of other disciplines. It was therefore requested to draw up, based on the questions posed by medievalists, a state of the art of the study of territories to specialists in geography, sociology, archaeology, ethno-anthropology, and paleoenvironmental sciences. A team of sixteen researchers thus worked for several years, refining the analytical frameworks and working protocols. In total, the contributions concerning the medieval millennium chose southern France as the observation field, with a flexible play of scales between sites and regions. Taking into account a long Middle Ages, from late antique deposits to the compoix of the 15th and 16th centuries, offers the possibility to examine temporal sequences and significant turning points. One often sought in the medieval period the origins of the states and nations of present-day Europe.
