No. 4's front cover has a fold across the upper right, the rear cover has a 3" x 1/4" piece torn out of the edge and an owners purple stamp on the first page. No. 5 is missing the rear cover. Tales of Magic and Mystery was edited by famed magician and then future author of The Shadow, Walter Gibson. Containing a mixture of articles about both magic and fantasy/mystery, it only lasted the 5 issues. Magic articles included ones about famed magician/escape artist Harry Houdini. The title is mostly famous for the first publication of H. P. Lovecraft's "Cool Air" in the March 1928 issue, a story that was initially rejected by Weird Tales. It also published short stories by pulp writer Frank Owen (like Lovecraft, a frequent contributor to Weird Tales), and by science fiction writer Miriam Allen deFord. Howard Thurston and Walter Gibson authored many of the articles, and all issues were illustrated by Earle Bergey. MA Consignment. 1392109. Special Collections - Downstairs.
