The Purefoys were a gentry family by lineage and inclination. Elizabeth Purefoy, for all of her ninety years of life, lived, worked in and dominated the parish of Shalstone in Buckinghamshire. She tutored her son Henry in the responsibilities of leading such a community. They rarely left the parish. It was for them an entire world.
